Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are a thin coat of clear resin that is applied to the biting surfaces of teeth, usually the rear molars. The back teeth are more prone to cavities because is difficult to reach them with a tooth brush and the surfaces contain pits and grooves that easily trap bacteria. It is hard for many adults to clean their back molars and almost impossible for our young Provo, Orem, and Utah County children.

Dental sealants fill in the pits and grooves on the rear molars to create a smooth surface. Orem family dentists most often recommend sealants for children’s permanent back teeth, though sometimes they are used for adults, too.

Provo parents may not realize how quickly a cavity can form in a young child’s mouth. Many Provo area kids that we see develop cavities even before they start kindergarten! It is vital that our local parents start regular dental visits early. The American Dental Association advises that a child’s initial dental exam take place soon after the first tooth erupts, but no later than the toddler’s first birthday.

Dental sealants protect teeth that have no decay (primary prevention) and also prevent further decay progression in teeth that show very early signs of disease (secondary prevention).

Healthy Baby Teeth For Orem Toddlers

Though we don’t often think about it, Orem children as young as 9 or 10 months of age can be infected with cavity producing bacteria, which causes cavities and tooth decay. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that almost 20% of children 2-5 have untreated cavities, and the percentage rises in children over 6. ¹

Tooth decay, if left undetected or untreated in Orem toddlers and children can result in altered eating habits, delayed speech development, and create an unhealthy environment for permanent tooth development. Healthy baby teeth lead to healthier permanent teeth later in life.

Utah County mothers who practice preventive dental and oral care during prenatal and postnatal periods can better protect their children from cavities. Orem parents and care providers should not prop a bottle for their baby in a crib or car seat, avoiding nighttime bottle or breast feeding, and clean their child’s teeth with a cloth or soft baby toothbrush as soon as they erupt. It is also recommended that Orem parents check regularly for chalky white or brown spots which could indicate the beginning of decay.²

Diet Changes For Healthier Teeth In Provo

We’re sure you brush and floss regularly and hopefully visit your Provo cosmetic dental practice for cleanings, but did you know that making small changes to your diet can improve your oral health?

Most Provo residents are aware that sugar found in candy, cookies, and sodas can harm your teeth, but some Provo people don’t realize that all carbohydrates can cause cavities. A handful of pretzels or a piece of pumpernickel bread can have the same effect on your teeth as a fudge brownie.

All carbohydrates break down into simple sugars, which are converted into plaque, which can then cause cavities and gum disease. Carbs are naturally sticky and adhere to your teeth. Eating carbs with meals is healthier than eating them as snacks because more saliva is generated at mealtime. Saliva helps prevent food particles from sticking to teeth.

Raise Your Dental IQ In Utah County

There are many simple things that the average Utah County area resident can do to raise their Dental IQ and improve their oral health. One simple lesson involves bacteria, and everyone’s mouth has a lot of it.

But, don’t worry, bacteria per se isn’t the problem. Dental problems occur for Provo patients when the balance of bacteria becomes unhealthy. This is where brushing and flushing might come into play. Another precaution you can take to guard against the wrong kind of bacteria is to keep your toothbrush as far away from the toilet as possible, and close the lid of the toilet before you flush.

Make sure to wash your hands before you brush and floss. No exceptions!

When it comes to a good toothbrush, don’t get sentimental. The American Dental Association recommends replacing your toothbrush every three to four months. If you can avoid the unhealthy balance of bacteria in your mouth, you can avoid gum disease, tooth decay, as well as bad breath.
