CEREC and E4D One Visit Dental Crowns

same day dental crowns Provo

If you’re like most people in Provo, you appreciate convenience in every aspect of life. In other words, straightforward processes with minimal disruption to your schedule.

Multiple Appointments Can Be a Hassle

When it comes to medical or dental services, convenience means the fewest visits possible. Hopefully, only one visit.

Let’s discuss dental crowns, for example. Most men and women need a restoration like a dental crown at some point in their life. A dental crown is one of the most versatile dental restorations. It covers the entire visible portion of a tooth and can correct a damaged tooth, a tooth with a large cavity, or a tooth that has undergone a root canal. A strong, natural-looking crown protects the remaining tooth and functions like a natural tooth

Dental Crowns Used to Take at Least Two Appointments

The standard dental crown procedure involves at least two visits. (Sometimes three or four depending on the situation.) On the first visit, the dentist would prepare the tooth and create an impression for the crown. To make impressions, the patient had to bite into a U-shaped tray filled with a thick, gooey substance (alginate or polyvinylsiloxane).

Then the dentist would send the impression to a dental lab to have the crown fabricated. This could take a couple of weeks. When the crown was finished, the patient would have to come back to the dental office to have it placed and cemented.

CEREC and E4D Same Day Crowns

Now, there are two appointment systems. The brand names are CEREC and E4D. Both systems use CAD (Computer Aided Design) and CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) to design and fabricate a perfectly-fitting crown.

CAD uses 3-D software that photographs teeth to create an exact model. In some dental practices, the patient can see the 3-D digital scans on a screen during their visit.

CEREC uses an infrared camera to transmit the tooth’s exact shape to the CAD software. E4D accomplishes the same thing with laser technology. As mentioned previously, CAD is the modeling software. Once there is a precise 3-D digital rendering, it’s time to actually engineer the restoration. That is what the CAM machine does. CAM is the milling operation, in which a small bit-like device operates at extremely high speeds to precisely carve a custom-fitting crown out of a ceramic block.

6 Steps For a One-Visit Dental Crown

Here is a recap of the entire same day dental crown operation:

  1. Tooth Preparation. Your dentist will prepare the site for your crown by clearing away decay or portions of the damaged tooth.
  2. Intraoral Scanning. Next, your dental professional will use an optical scanner to create a 3-D digital scan of the damaged tooth and surrounding teeth.
  3. Restoration Design. With the 3-D images, the dentist will use CAD software to design the final restoration.
  4. Milling. A milling machine uses the 3-D scan and chisels the crown from a single small brick of ceramic.
  5. Sintering and Polishing. The dentist then stains or glazes to make the surface of the dental crown look like a natural tooth. Following that, the dentist polishes the restoration to perfection.
  6. Cementation. Finally, the restoration is permanently affixed to your mouth. (Colgate.com)

Did we mention that this occurs in one same-day procedure?

When we crown one of our patients at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Provo, the coronation is a celebration of a stronger smile.

The need for a dental crown is usually apparent. Crowns (sometimes called caps) restore a decayed or damaged tooth to its original size, shape, and functionality.

Crowns are sometimes extended down to a tooth’s root surface. Most often, though, they replace the top portion of the tooth – also known as the crown, hence the name of the restoration.

Dental crowns are custom-made for each tooth. Once a crown is cemented permanently into place, they strengthen what was a weakened tooth. They prevent cracked teeth from cracking any further and provide support to teeth that have large, existing fillings.

Dental crowns from Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Provo are an excellent solution for damaged teeth. We have placed them in patients from American Fork and Lehi, who also come to our practice for dental implants and much more. Call our office to schedule a checkup today!

What If My Dental Crown Cracks, Comes Loose, or Comes Off?

what to do if dental crown comes off Provo

This article from Hammond Aesthetic and General Dentistry in Provo is about dental crowns.

Quite often, people get upset if their crown moves or comes completely off. This is understandable.

It may have shifted or come off while brushing, flossing, or even simply eating.

If this has happened to you, don’t stress! Here is what to do if your crown comes off.

There are three steps:

1. First things first, find your crown if it has come off entirely. If you think you may have unwittingly swallowed it, it’s not the end of the world. This is fairly common. You will need to have a new one made. Whereas the original may be reattached if you find it in your mouth. As long as it’s not damaged.

2. The second thing you need to do is call us.

Remember these two important things:

  • Even if we didn’t provide the crown service, we can re-attach it for you.
  • If the crown is broken, we can construct a replacement crown in one visit.

3. What if your crown comes off after business hours or on the weekend?

You can glue it back on while waiting for an appointment. This will protect the exposed tooth. Remember, the tooth is not as sturdy as an uncrowned tooth.

To reattach it, we recommend using denture adhesive. You can find some at a drugstore.

Follow the instructions on the adhesive. To make certain it sets, softly bite down on the crown while the adhesive is still wet. Be extra cautious while waiting for your appointment. Eat soft foods so you don’t damage the tooth.

At Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Provo, we provide dental crowns, as well as dental implants and many other services. Schedule an appointment with us today.

Keeping Dental Patients Comfortable

Keeping Dental Patients Comfortable in Provo

To state the obvious, nobody enjoys pain. At Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry, we know this, and have made patient comfort our first priority. This sometimes means sedation dentistry.

In conjunction with creating a calm environment, we have various medications that can lessen and even eliminate pain associated with different dental procedures to give you a more enjoyable experience.

Some of the most common pain-relieving medications used in dentistry are topical anesthetics. These are swabbed directly onto mouth tissue and numb the surface layers. Topical anesthetics can curtail the pain of mouth sores, or they can be applied to prepare the mouth for an injection.

Local anesthetics are injected into mouth tissue (usually the gums) to block the nerve sensations to individual areas of the mouth. Dentists frequently numb the mouth in this way before filling cavities, treating gum disease, or doing cosmetic dentistry procedures.

More involved dental procedures may call for oral conscious sedation, a form of sedation dentistry that involves taking a sedative before your procedure. If you undergo oral conscious sedation, you’ll need someone to drive you home afterward.

At Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Provo, we want our patients to be informed about their dental care, and comfortable throughout any procedure. We offer family and cosmetic dentistry. Make an appointment today.

What Is Necessary For A Dental Crown?

dental crowns Provo

Dental crowns have been around for millennia and are still used to restore smiles today. Ancient dentists used ivory, bone, and seashells to make crowns for teeth. Evidence of gold crowns dates from 200 A.D. Porcelain crowns appeared in the 1800s. With the advancement of metal casting techniques in the 1900s, crown technology took a big leap forward.

A dental crown procedure consists of multiple steps:

Tooth Preparation
Your dentist will anesthetize the tooth to be crowned and then prepare it. All decay is removed and the tooth is shaped. Usually, the dentist files off tooth structure to reduce the size and create the proper shape. Sometimes, the tooth is too small to begin with; in that case, the dentist builds up the core of the tooth with filling material to design a durable base for the crown. All-metal crowns – as opposed to porcelain crowns – have thinner sides, requiring less removal of tooth structure.

Creating a Good Impression
The dentist will use a putty-like substance to form an impression of the tooth and surrounding teeth. An impression will also be made of the teeth that oppose the crown. This ensures that the crown does not negatively impact the bite.

The Temporary Crown
A temporary crown is used to protect the tooth and make sure it doesn’t move in the mouth while the permanent crown is being produced. Patient need to be careful with their temporary crown. It is not as strong as the permanent crown and is attached only with temporary cement. Avoid chewing gum and eating sticky foods. Be aware that the tooth may be sensitive to hot and cold.

Choosing a Color
If the new crown will be fabricated with porcelain, you and your dentist will use a shade guide to elect a shade for the restoration. Most people don’t have teeth that are exactly the same color. You will need to establish the most appropriate shade to blend in with the surrounding teeth.

The Lab Team Works Its Magic
The dentist or a laboratory technician then uses the model to establish the crown. Some dentists have the equipment required to manufacture crowns right in their office. Same day restorations are created with a machine that mills a crown from a small block of ceramic in the proper shade.

Your Crown Is Put In Place

When the new crown is ready, your dentist places it in your mouth and makes any needed modification to attain a perfect fit. This process shouldn’t be rushed. Sometimes less than a millimeter of drilling can make the difference between an ill-fitting crown that makes irregular contact with the opposing teeth and a crown that is accurately fitted.

Crown Or Veneer?

cosmetic dentistry Provo

I am Chris Hammond of Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Provo.  Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry offers multiple cosmetic dental procedures for creating stunning smiles. Two of the most popular procedures are dental crowns and porcelain veneers. Many patients don’t understand the difference between the two. Generally, a crown strengthens a compromised tooth while a veneer is used mainly for cosmetic improvements.

A dental crown covers the entire visible part of the tooth. A veneer is an ultra-thin layer for the front of a tooth. Veneers are made with several layers of extremely strong ceramic laminate. Crowns can be made of all porcelain (ceramic), porcelain fused to metal, or gold. Both crowns and veneers are affixed to the tooth with special adhesive. Crowns and veneers are durable and can last many years if properly cared for, though they are not stronger than natural enamel.

Both of these procedures improve the tooth aesthetically, but dental crowns are usually a better solution for a tooth that has been compromised by decay, damage, or a root canal. Veneers can fix the shape of a tooth, correct a minor crack, cover stains, or straighten the appearance of teeth that are slightly misaligned.

The success of a crown or veneer procedure depends on adept professionals at the lab and in the dentist’s office. Your cosmetic dentist must prep the tooth, create a precision mold, and submit an accurate order to the lab.

The role of the Provo dental lab technician is equally vital.  Highly skilled lab technicians fabricate custom dental crowns and veneers to the specifications of the cosmetic dentist. They must have the competence to meet the precise standards needed for successful restorations.

Consider the myriad characteristics of a restoration: the exact shape, the perfect size, the precise color, and the proper placement in the mouth. This is a case of all or nothing – each variable must be right on the mark or it must be redone.

The team at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry and the fantastic staff at our dental lab work together to provide the highest quality dental restorations for our valued patients.

6 Ways Dental Crowns Restore Orem Smiles

cost of dental crowns Orem

Dental crowns have been around a long time, and they continue to play an important role in Provo cosmetic dentistry. A dental crown, often called a cap, covers the visible part of the tooth.

Dental crowns are used for several problems common among Orem cosmetic dentistry patients:

An old crown that is damaged or ill-fitting
A broken tooth
A tooth with extreme decay
A tooth that has had a root canal
A tooth that is too small or misshapen
A tooth that prevents a proper bite

A dental crown serves both structural and aesthetic purposes. It protects a natural tooth from additional decay and damage while permitting normal function. In addition, a dental crown often prevents the need for an extraction and the bone loss that can occur with a missing tooth.

Orem cosmetic dentistry patients who get a dental crown should not assume that the tooth is now invincible. Crowns need daily cleaning and flossing just like natural teeth. The remaining tooth structure just around the gumline could still become decayed and the soft tissue around the crown is susceptible to gum disease. Chewing hard foods or using your teeth as a tool can cause a crown to crack or break. (Use scissors to open a stubborn plastic package – don’t bite and pull!) Your Provo cosmetic dentist can advise you on caring for your new crown so that it will last as long as possible. Some of our American Fork, Orem, and Provo patients have crowns that are still looking beautiful after ten years.
