When Style And Oral Health Collide in Provo

Consult Your Provo Cosmetic Dentist Before Getting Oral Piercings

Oral piercing is a popular form of body-art in Provo, but just because it’s popular doesn’t mean it’s safe. We’re Dr. Hammond, dentists serving the Provo area. When our patients ask us about the safety of oral piercings, we make sure they understand the possible consequences.

First, Provo residents should know that infection is always a major concern with any piercing, but because the mouth is the perfect environment for breeding bacteria, oral piercings are especially problematic. Chewing, swallowing, and speaking can also be impaired by an oral piercing.

Oral piercings can lead to an increase in saliva flow and, possibly, excessive drooling, something my Provo dental patients generally want to avoid. (We don’t know anyone in Provo who thinks drooling is attractive.) Chipped or cracked teeth, damage to dental fillings, and metal sensitivity are other possible results.

Another serious risk associated with piercings that should concern Provo residents is nerve damage. Many people experience temporary numbness after a piercing, but for some, sensations never return. An injured nerve can also affect facial movements as well as your sense of taste.

Do you really want to risk looking like a stroke victim for the rest of your life?

If you’ve read through this and you’re still sure a tongue bar or lip piercing is for you, please consult your Provo area cosmetic dentist so they can help you make the safest decision possible for your dental health. If you are looking for a family or general dentistry practice, our friendly and professional staff here at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry would be happy to schedule an appointment for you. We offer sedation dentistry, porcelain veneers, Invisalign clear braces, and more!

We may even convince you that safe, effective cosmetic dentistry such as teeth whitening, veneers, or bonding would be a smarter and safer way to express your personality and boost your confidence. Give us a call today!

Orem Guide To Plaque, Calculus, And Cavities

General Dentistry Orem

Hi. We’re Dr. Hammond. Welcome to our Orem dental blog! We find that many of our patients in the Orem area get a couple of general dentistry terms mixed up. Today, I would like to clarify the differences between plaque, calculus, and cavities.

Plaque is a film that covers teeth – a sticky layer of bacteria. You can remove plaque through daily brushing and flossing. However, if it isn’t removed it can build up and harden into calculus.

Calculus, also known as tartar, is hardened plaque that also accumulates minerals from food and saliva. Regular check-ups and cleanings with your Orem dentist are necessary to remove tartar as well as hard-to-reach plaque.

Plaque and calculus are not cavities, but they can lead to cavities. A cavity is basically a hole in the tooth caused by decay. Because plaque and calculus contain bacteria, the bacteria release acids which accelerate tooth decay and eventually lead to more cavities.

A good rule of thumb for Orem family dentistry patients is this: Avoid plaque to avoid calculus and tartar to avoid tooth decay to avoid cavities. Got it?

I hope you’ve found this helpful, and if you’re in the Orem area and are in need of quality dental care, call our office at 801-374-0070 to schedule an appointment today.

Our friendly and professional staff would love to answer any questions you have about our services, including cosmetic dentistry, teeth whitening, and veneers.

Whitening vs Bleaching At Hammond Aesthetic & Family Dentistry In Provo

Teeth Whitening Provo

Provo teeth whitening is a popular cosmetic dentistry service that Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry provides in-office or through a take home kit. Results vary, but most patients experience significant lightening that lasts up to a year. Our Provo area teeth whitening clients affirm that a whiter smile boosts self confidence and can take years of wear and discoloration away to reveal a brighter smile.

Teeth whitening and teeth bleaching, however, mean two different things in Provo cosmetic dentistry. Surface cracks and stains occur on tooth enamel, exposing the yellower dentin below the surface. Discoloration can be the result of the natural aging process, illness, genetics, or dark colored food or drink. Foods and beverages that are both dark colored and acidic – like wine, coffee, and tomato sauce  – have even greater staining power.

Teeth whitener can refer to any product used to remove stains from tooth enamel: toothpaste, do it yourself strips, and certain mouthwashes are safe and inexpensive and can turn teeth whiter with continued, regular use.
The extent of whitening varies, and it takes dedicated, consistent use to see results.

Whitening products that do not contain bleach can usually make teeth two to four shades lighter. These are a good choice for Provo men and women with sensitive teeth and gums that can react to products containing harsher whitening chemicals. For pregnant or nursing mothers, the non-bleach whitening products are the safer choice.

Teeth bleaching is used to describe a tooth whitening product that contains a form of bleach, either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, in varying concentrations. For best results, Zoom whitening should done in-office by your Provo cosmetic dentist. Bleaching can achieve more noticeable results, sometimes up to seven shades lighter. Intrinsic stains on the dentin, as well as surface stains can be effectively lightened under an experienced Provo dentist’s supervision.

Dr. Hammond specialize in teeth whitening, teeth bleaching, porcelain veneers, dental crowns, and complete smile redesign. Call the friendly and professional team at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry to schedule a consultation! Bright, sparkling teeth make you want to smile all the time.

Helping Your Smile Last a Lifetime

Wear A Crown In Orem

Dental Crowns Orem

Some Orem residents who have a weak or broken tooth may want to research dental crowns as a solution to improve their smile and overall oral health. A crown is really a cap or covering that is tooth-shaped and when it is in place, it will cover the portion of the covered tooth that is above the gum line.

Crowns can be made of metals, resin, ceramic, porcelain, or a porcelain-fused-to-metal material. Your Orem area cosmetic dentist will usually put in a temporary crown while a permanent crown is being created especially for your mouth in a dental laboratory.

Dental crowns have been used successfully in Orem cosmetic dentistry for decades.

Many Orem area dentists use crowns when performing smile makeovers to cover patient’s discolored or poorly shaped teeth. Strong, natural-looking crowns are also used with dental implants.

If you think a dental crown may be right for you, check with your Orem dentist. Or, if you are searching for quality dental care in the Orem area, call us here at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry. We are located near Orem and have been serving the area since 1996. We are currently accepting new patients at our state-of-the art, yet warm and comfortable dental office.

Call us at 801-374-0070 and our friendly and professional staff can answer any questions you have about teeth whitening, veneers, enamel shaping, or any other cosmetic dental, general oral health, or dental financing questions.

Professional Teeth Whitening

Teeth Whitening Utah County A brilliant smile leaves a lasting impression. Professional whitening of teeth can dramatically improve your overall appearance and give you a boost in self-confidence.

Our teeth often turn yellow or gray as we age. The things we eat and drink continually such as colored sodas, coffee and red wine contribute to the staining. Most of us are aware that smoking is not only bad for your lungs; it is an enemy to beautiful teeth. If you are considering having your teeth whitened, you must first decide which method to use. At Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry, we enjoy discussing treatment options with our clients. To schedule a consultation to talk about teeth whitening or any other dental procedure, call 801-374-0070.

At-home teeth whitening treatments usually consist of trays filled with whitening solution. It takes 7-14 days to achieve 3-6 shades lighter. Brush-on teeth gels and whitening strips take up to 30 days to achieve barely noticeable results. Whitening toothpaste may lighten superficial stains but often provides no change in appearance of teeth.

Professional Zoom whitening procedures performed by a dental professional achieve dramatic results that last far longer than other treatments.

All of the whitening methods may cause tooth pain or sensitivity, but this usually goes away in a few days. If you have crowns, porcelain veneers or bonding, it is important to talk to your dentist before choosing a whitening method.

Modern Dentistry With No Oxen Hooves In Provo

General Dentistry Provo

Hi, our names are Dr. Hammond and here at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry, we have been providing excellent general dentistry care for the people of the Provo area since 1996.

One of the most crucial elements of good oral health is daily tooth brushing with an effective toothpaste. There is a wide variety of toothpastes available. I recommend you use one with fluoride and make sure it has the ADA seal. This ensures that the toothpaste has been tested, claims are being met, and the ingredients are correct.

Just because a toothpaste claims to have a ‘teeth whitening‘ agent doesn’t mean it has fluoride.

Toothpaste as we know it has only been in existence since the late 1800s. Fluoride was added in 1914. The earliest evidence of toothpaste or dental cream dates back to 3000-5000 BC. The Ancient Egyptians pulverized oxen hooves, egg shells, pumice, myrrh, and water creating one of the earliest forms of toothpaste.

The Greeks and Romans began adding crushed bones and bark to the mix. The taste most likely was hard to take. During this same time the people of China and India were using a similar paste, but adding flavorings, like ginseng and herbal mints making it a bit more palatable.

Provo toothpaste users have no excuse for not brushing their teeth daily with the toothpaste we have available today. If you do your part, we at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry can provide cosmetic dentistry, porcelain veneers, family dentistry, and sedation dentistry.

The experienced staff at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry want to help make all Provo area smiles whiter and brighter. Contact us today so we can answer any questions you may have about Provo tooth whitening, invisible braces, or cosmetic dentistry.

Help For Tetracycline And Fluoride Stains At Hammond Aesthetic & Family Dentistry

Teeth Whitening Utah County

Here at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry, our mission is making the smiles of all Utah County residents white and bright. Our names are Dr. Hammond and today we are going to talk about ways to enhance your beautiful smile.

Maybe as a self-conscious Utah County area teen you were prescribed tetracycline to combat acne, but have now been left with discolored teeth. Or maybe the municipal water you drank growing up had excessive fluoride, another cause of tarnished teeth.

If you are like many of our Utah County patients you have sipped one too many dark beverages such as coffee, soda, and wine; and now your teeth are dark and dingy. Call us today at 801-374-0070 to talk about our extensive treatment plans.

One of the options we recommend at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry for treating discolored teeth are dental veneers which are sometimes called porcelain laminates. The reason we recommend veneers is that veneers not only restore discolored teeth, but they can cover worn, chipped, and cracked teeth.

This is done by placing a thin composite of porcelain over the damaged tooth or teeth leaving a gorgeous, white, flawless smile. At Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry we feel that porcelain veneers are the least invasive form of cosmetic dentistry, yet the results are stunning. The smiles of our happy Utah County veneer patients are dazzling.

The team at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry also offers teeth whitening, dental restorations and clear braces. Come see why the residents of Utah County have been improving their smiles at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry since 1996.

Lighten Up In Orem

Zoom Whitening Orem Hello! Today’s dental article is for Orem people with stained teeth. Do you think your teeth are too stained for teeth whitening to have any effect? Think again. At Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Orem, we are whitening smiles for patients with both intrinsic and extrinsic stains.

Extrinsic stains are caused by dark colored foods and drinks, smoking, and normal aging. Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry cosmetic dentistry patients with extrinsic stains achieve great results from both in-office and take-home teeth Zoom whitening systems.

Intrinsic stains form on the inside but can be seen from the outside. Tetracycline, excessive fluoride, trauma, and aging can cause intrinsic staining for unfortunate Orem general dentistry patients. Though these stains are harder to remove, many Orem patients with intrinsic staining can whiten their teeth with take-home whitening kits. The process often takes longer, but with persistence, intrinsic stains can be lightened.

In addition to teeth whitening, we provide a full menu of cosmetic dental procedures at our Orem area office. With porcelain veneers, you can correct the shape of your teeth in addition to brightening the color. If you are missing a tooth, a dental implant may be the solution. Call 801-374-0070 for a dental implant or smile design consultation.

If you are embarrassed by a less-than-sparkling smile, let the team of dental professionals at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry help you lighten up.

All Tooth Stains Are Not Created Equal

Teeth Whitening Provo Will any of our locally advertised Provo teeth whitening options remove the stains from your teeth?

The effectiveness of teeth bleaching in Provo depends partly on the types of stains.

Extrinsic tooth stains are the easiest to remove. These surface stains have not yet penetrated through the enamel into the dentin. Extrinsic stains are caused by dark-colored foods and beverages like blueberries, carrots, coffee, red wine, and cola. And nicotine is no better for your smile than it is for your lungs.

Unfortunately, even if you avoid these common teeth stainers, your teeth will become discolored over time. Like gray hair, wrinkles, and memory lapses, a dull smile is an inevitable part of aging for Provo retirees.

Intrinsic tooth stains develop from the inside out. Tooth injury and tetracycline are the usual culprits. Intrinsic stains are more difficult to remove completely, but it is possible to lighten them with professional tooth whitening available at your Provo cosmetic dental office.

If your teeth are stained, whether from coffee, tetracycline, or excessive fluoride, call Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry at 801-374-0070. We have treated many Provo general dentistry clients with extreme tooth discoloration.

It is never too late or too early to brighten your smile.

Provo seniors can take years off their appearance by restoring the youthful white smile they once enjoyed. Provo teens and young adults with surface stains can prevent them from becoming intrinsic stains with tooth whitening.

Speaking of the younger set, did you know that people who drink energy drinks are at risk for many dental problems?

Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry is the cosmetic dental specialist in Provo. Discover why hundreds of families trust us with their smiles.
