Small Dental Annoyance Or Serious Problem?

mouth sores Utah County

Today in the Provo dental blog we are going to talk about stomatitis. Stomatitis is dental-speak for something very common: non-specific irritations found in the mouth. Stomatitis is ordinarily caused by cold sores, gum disease, or even from biting the inside of the mouth (ouch!). Any time the membranes in the mouth become inflamed, they are referred to as stomatitis.

Most Utah County, American Fork, and Lehi dental patients have probably suffered from stomatitis and don’t think it’s a big deal. The good news is that these patients are usually right because the majority of these irritations clear up on their own in less than two weeks. While they might affect your ability to speak or eat or fall asleep, they are typically just a temporary inconvenience.

However, there are cases where a bacterial or a viral infection can occur in these areas of inflammation.

Because of this possibility, your Orem area dentist should be aware of these issues. Even if you are fortunate and there is no infection present, your dentist can always help you treat the symptoms of stomatitis.

Tooth Bleaching Fact And Fiction

Provo Teeth Whitening and Veneers You have probably seen ads for lightening products contain terms such as “white brite,” “22 carbamide peroxide,” and “peroxide teeth.” How do you separate tooth bleaching fact from fiction?

Some tooth whitening dentists will guarantee fantastic results for any patient that desires a whiter smile. At Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry, we only recommend tooth bleaching for patients that are good candidates for the process. We invite you to speak with Dr. Chris Hammond at our Provo office. Not all teeth whitening systems are appropriate for every person.

Don’t be fooled by smile whitening hype and risk poor results. If you have existing cosmetic dental work such as crowns, bonding, partial dentures or bridge work, it is important to talk to an experienced professional about worry-free teeth whitening.

If you have all-natural teeth that are dull or stained, tooth whitening will probably brighten your smile. If you have several crowns in the front of your mouth, veneers, or gums that have receded, conventional tooth-whitening may not be successful. Porcelain veneers may be a better solution for you. The vast majority of veneer recipients are happy about the results. Porcelain veneers not only brighten your smile, they can provide many other improvements.

Veneers are sometimes called “instant orthodontics” because they can correct tooth misalignment and gaps as well as furnish instant teeth whitening.

Schedule a consultation by calling 801-374-0070. I look forward to meeting you and discussing your unique smile.

Let’s Work Together To Keep Your Smile Healthy And Beautiful

low cost tooth bleaching Orem

Here at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry we approach all your dental needs from two separate angles – what we can do in our office and what you can do at home. For example, tooth whitening and correcting discoloration can be treated in our office or at home. Here in the office there are safe and effective methods for lightening yellowed or stained tooth enamel. At-home whitening methods are also safe and effective and sometimes more affordable.

Additionally, we advise you regarding food and drink choices that can affect your whitened smile. Be aware of staining culprits such as coffee, tea, tobacco and harsh sodas. We understand that avoiding these items altogether is not an easy lifestyle change. Nor do we expect it.

Awareness and precaution can make a big difference. Rinsing your mouth out with water after drinking a dark or sugary drink can cut down on the contact your teeth have with such substances. Prolonged exposure to sugar can lead to buildup of plaque and tartar and prolonged exposure to staining substances can lead to stronger staining and discoloration.

If you are interested in making improvements to your smile and creating a more confident appearance for your professional career or personal relationships, please pick up the phone and contact the awesome staff at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry today 801-374-0070. Why Sports Drinks Put Teeth At Risk

Provo Dental Financing

Many health-conscious individuals in the Orem area exercise regularly, and many turn to sports drinks for hydration.

While it’s true that they help keep electrolyte levels in the body (and pose fewer health risks than energy drinks), their acidity can erode tooth enamel. And when tooth enamel erodes, those pearly whites are more susceptible to staining, discoloration, and decay.

Nobody wants stained teeth, so next time you’re at the gym, try substituting water for sports drinks.

If you have already experienced staining and tooth discoloration and would like to know more about porcelain veneers and teeth whitening, give Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry a call at 801-374-0070.

Smile Makeover Questions Answered

Lehi cosmetic smile makeover

Even some Provo people with top notch oral health want to improve specific components of their smile. Though proper brushing is critical for healthy teeth, it won’t re-contour a gumline or repair a chipped tooth. A cavity-free mouth may still have stained or slightly misaligned teeth.

If you want to correct the smile elements that can’t be improved with diligent oral hygiene, call 801-374-0070 to schedule a smile makeover consultation with our dentists at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry. During your consultation, we will meet with you about:

Cost
Each smile makeover is completely unique, and therefore the price varies from patient to patient depending on the specific procedures performed. During your consultation, Dr. Hammond will give you an estimate for your cosmetic dental smile makeover.

Function
Proper function is priority one. Your smile transformation will maintain or improve your ability to talk, eat, and smile.

Beauty
This is probably the main reason you are choosing to transform your smile. Dr. Hammond will describe the cosmetic improvements you can expect and the technical details about the procedures.

Sedation
If your smile makeover requires several hours of treatment, or if you have dental anxiety, you may want to look at sedation. Dr. Hammond will explain your sedation options and the associated costs.

Health
If you have existing tooth decay or gum disease, these problems need to be addressed prior to your cosmetic concerns. It may be possible to combine needed restorative procedures with your cosmetic work.

Can You Handle A Dental Emergency?

American Fork after hours dental

At Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry, we hope you never experience a serious dental emergency. It’s important, however, to know what to do in such a situation. Here is a quiz on dental emergencies and less urgent oral issues.

1. One of the wires on your braces breaks. What do you do?

a. Cut off the loose piece.
b. Put a piece of orthodontic wax on the end if it is irritating your tongue or gums. Schedule an appointment with your orthodontist to have it fixed.
c. If the wire has cut your gums, rinse with a solution of salt and water.

Both b and c are correct. If you don’t have a piece of orthodontic wax, you can use a cotton ball to cover the sharp end. If you cut off the loose end of the wire, you risk swallowing it.

2. Your five year-old falls off his bike, hits his face on the sidewalk, and knocks out one of his front teeth. What do you do before driving immediately to the nearest Utah County dental office or Orem ER?

a. Put the tooth back in the socket.
b. If the tooth is dirty, scrub it with a brush.
c. Put the tooth in milk.

The answer depends on whether it is a permanent tooth or a baby tooth. If a permanent tooth is knocked out, it may be successfully re-implanted if done quickly. Make sure you only hold the tooth by the crown, never touch the root. If the tooth is dirty, rinse it gently with water being cautious not to brush off any tissue attached. It is best to reinsert the tooth into the socket. This may not be possible with younger children. Because it is essential to keep the tooth from drying out on your way to your Utah County dentist or nearest Orem area emergency room, you can put the tooth in a cup of milk. Baby teeth should not be reinserted because it can potentially damage the emerging tooth.

3. You lose a filling and the tooth starts hurting. After
scheduling an appointment with your Provo  dentist, what do you do in the meantime?

a. Save the filling.
b. Take an OTC pain reliever.
c. Put an aspirin on the tooth.

Both a and b are correct. Though your Provo dentist probably can’t use the same filling to repair the problem, it may reveal important information about the cause of the separation. Never put an aspirin on a tooth because the acid in it could irritate your gums.

4. One of your teeth suddenly darkens. What are the possible causes?

a. The nerve inside the tooth is damaged.
b. It is side effect of a medication you are taking.
c. Gum disease.
d. An infection.

The answer is all of the above.

For any dental emergency or other oral condition, call an urgent dental care office or Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Provo. We have been providing quality dental care for Orem residents since 1967. If you add our address and phone number (801-374-0070) to your phone contacts right now, you won’t have to search for it in the case of an emergency. When trying to save a knocked-out tooth, every minute counts.

4 Smile Boosters

Lehi cosmetic dental and tooth implants

Hi, my name is Drs. Chris Hammond. My dental practice, Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry, has been serving the Provo, Utah area since 1967. Today in my Orem dental blog, I would like to highlight four ways you can improve your smile.

1. Teeth Whitening is quick and non-invasive. External tooth whitening occurs when teeth whitening agents bleach the teeth directly. This can be done in your home or in the office of your dentist.

2. Dental Implants are another common procedure that many Provo residents seek. A dental implant is secured into the jawbone to replace the roots of a lost tooth. A crown is then attached to the implant to replace the missing tooth. Along with improving appearance and restoring tooth function, the dental implant does double-duty by helping to preserve bone support.

3. Dental Bonding can be done with various materials such as porcelains and composite resins. With recent advances in cosmetic dental services, these materials can more precisely replicate natural tooth structure and natural appearance. This procedure is commonly used to correct chipped or cracked teeth.

4. Periodontal Plastic Surgery is a wonderful solution for gum recession and cosmetic irregularities. Gum tissue is removed or added to give the appropriate framework to the teeth.

I hope this post has helped you to get better acquainted with some highly effective cosmetic dentistry treatments. A combination of procedures can be used to give Provo dental patients a complete smile redesign.

To schedule an appointment at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry, give us a call at 801-374-0070.

Can I Objectively Evaluate My Smile?

esthetic smile design Utah County

It is no secret that a beautiful, pleasing, healthy smile can be your most revered physical attribute. After all, people notice your smile first thing. How do you know if your smile is detracting from your appearance?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder; if you look at your smile in the mirror and believe it is unattractive, it doesn’t really matter what anybody else thinks. But what if you are not sure?

There are many problems that are generally considered to detract from brilliant smiles. Missing teeth is a biggie. People who are missing teeth in the back of the mouth may mistakenly believe that the gap doesn’t show. They are usually wrong. When smiling, talking, laughing, or eating, a missing tooth definitely shows – even if the missing tooth is the very last molar.

Yellow or gray teeth diminish the appeal of a smile – even one that is perfectly healthy and aligned – and crooked teeth are usually considered unattractive.

There are a few unique smile characteristics that some people proudly show off and others wish to change. For instance, a gap between the two front teeth can become your trademark. True Blood star Anna Paquin, actor Woody Harrelson, and singer Seal have retained their spaces. Perhaps the most famous gap-toothed smile belongs to seventy year-old model Lauren Hutton who has proudly flashed it throughout her fifty-year career. Other celebrities such as Zac Efron, Tom Cruise, and Keith Urban weren’t happy with gaps so they transformed their smiles with unprecedented cosmetic dentistry.

If you want an objective aesthetic evaluation of your smile, how can you do this? You can’t see your smile from every angle when you look in the mirror. If you want an expert opinion on the attractiveness of your smile, talk to a cosmetic dentist. There are a surprising number of design principals that are used in cosmetic dental smile makeovers. These include size, shape, alignment, proportion, color, and translucency. Furthermore, cosmetic dentists also consider the characteristics of the gums, lips, and facial features.

When you have a cosmetic dental consultation, you will be able to see how the critical elements work together to create a natural-looking, unforgettable smile. Bottom line? If you want to change your smile, you can! Schedule a consultation today by calling 801-374-0070.
