Fill and Heal: Bioactive Glass
A new type of filling created from bioactive glass has been shown to prolong the life of fillings, by inhibiting secondary decay and replacing lost minerals.

“Bioactive glass, which is a type of crushed glass that is able to interact with the body, has been used in some types of bone healing for decades,” said Jamie Kruzic, professor of advanced structural and biomaterials at the Oregon State University College of Engineering. “Our research shows it may be very promising for tooth fillings.”

Stem Cells
Stem cell regenerative medicine is poised to provide a host of exciting breakthroughs in dentistry.

A research team from the University of Nottingham and Harvard University is applying stem cell technology to dentistry with the development of stem-cell based biomaterials that regenerate tooth dentin. The goal is to use them in fillings and root canals to save and regenerate tooth structure. The research is in its early stages, but this technology could one day help preserve millions of smiles for men and women worldwide.

3D Printing
3D printing is already being used in some dental offices to manufacture aligners, retainers, drilling guides for implant placement, and extremely accurate models for restorations. As the printers become faster and less pricey, you will be seeing them in more Utah dental offices.

A dental implant is a more extensive replacement for a missing tooth. An implant consists of an artificial tooth PLUS an artificial root (usually biocompatible titanium). With local anesthesia, the artificial root is actually inserted into the jaw bone where it integrates with the bone tissue. There are three parts to a dental implant: the artificial root, the connecting abutment, and the final crown or denture. An implant offers beauty, strength, natural function and protection from bone recession that often occurs at the site of a missing tooth.

Dentures
Most Provo residents have heard of dentures: a plate holding artificial teeth that can be removed by the patient. These are custom made and can contain varying numbers of teeth. Hello! We are so glad you came to the Provo dental health blog. This is the place where we take the time to answer some of the questions cosmetic dentistry patients in the Orem area are curious about. Today we are discussing veneers. You may have heard the word veneer used in conjunction with cosmetic dentistry, and that is because they are a popular and effective cosmetic dentistry tool.

Veneers are covers for the front part of the teeth. They are usually used to correct tooth imperfections, such as chipping, staining, decay, or crooked teeth. Super-strong, tooth-colored porcelain laminate is shaped into thin shells and custom-fitted for each patient’s unique set of teeth.
