Can I Objectively Evaluate My Smile?

esthetic smile design Utah County

It is no secret that a beautiful, pleasing, healthy smile can be your most revered physical attribute. After all, people notice your smile first thing. How do you know if your smile is detracting from your appearance?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder; if you look at your smile in the mirror and believe it is unattractive, it doesn’t really matter what anybody else thinks. But what if you are not sure?

There are many problems that are generally considered to detract from brilliant smiles. Missing teeth is a biggie. People who are missing teeth in the back of the mouth may mistakenly believe that the gap doesn’t show. They are usually wrong. When smiling, talking, laughing, or eating, a missing tooth definitely shows – even if the missing tooth is the very last molar.

Yellow or gray teeth diminish the appeal of a smile – even one that is perfectly healthy and aligned – and crooked teeth are usually considered unattractive.

There are a few unique smile characteristics that some people proudly show off and others wish to change. For instance, a gap between the two front teeth can become your trademark. True Blood star Anna Paquin, actor Woody Harrelson, and singer Seal have retained their spaces. Perhaps the most famous gap-toothed smile belongs to seventy year-old model Lauren Hutton who has proudly flashed it throughout her fifty-year career. Other celebrities such as Zac Efron, Tom Cruise, and Keith Urban weren’t happy with gaps so they transformed their smiles with unprecedented cosmetic dentistry.

If you want an objective aesthetic evaluation of your smile, how can you do this? You can’t see your smile from every angle when you look in the mirror. If you want an expert opinion on the attractiveness of your smile, talk to a cosmetic dentist. There are a surprising number of design principals that are used in cosmetic dental smile makeovers. These include size, shape, alignment, proportion, color, and translucency. Furthermore, cosmetic dentists also consider the characteristics of the gums, lips, and facial features.

When you have a cosmetic dental consultation, you will be able to see how the critical elements work together to create a natural-looking, unforgettable smile. Bottom line? If you want to change your smile, you can! Schedule a consultation today by calling 801-374-0070.

Losing Your Adult Teeth In Provo, Utah?

dental implant cost Utah County

It was one thing to lose that set of baby teeth but, unfortunately, these don’t grow back. (And you don’t look adorable with a gap-toothed smile.) If you feel like you are losing your adult teeth to staining, decay, chipping or brittle aging then it’s time to visit with Dr. Hammond at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry. Since 1967, Dr. Hammond has built a practice teeming with experience, filled with kindness, flowing with a gentle touch, and carrying all the wisdom of wise, capable professionals.

When it comes to the prospect of losing your adult teeth, the preference is always to save your natural teeth. If this is not possible, we can look at other ways to maintain your ability to eat, drink, speak, laugh and smile in selfies.

Dental Bridge
A dental bridge is used where a tooth is missing. It “bridges” a gap between teeth. There is a false tooth (or teeth) attached to the surrounding teeth. Dental bridges have been used with success for generations of dental patients who have lost teeth for various reasons.

Dental Implant
A dental implant is a more extensive replacement for a missing tooth. An implant consists of an artificial tooth PLUS an artificial root (usually biocompatible titanium). With local anesthesia, the artificial root is actually inserted into the jaw bone where it integrates with the bone tissue. There are three parts to a dental implant: the artificial root, the connecting abutment, and the final crown or denture. An implant offers beauty, strength, natural function and protection from bone recession that often occurs at the site of a missing tooth.

Dentures
Most Provo residents have heard of dentures: a plate holding artificial teeth that can be removed by the patient. These are custom made and can contain varying numbers of teeth. Sometimes the entire set of upper and lower teeth have to be pulled and a denture created for chewing and speaking. Modern dentistry offers a myriad of custom dental implant-denture combinations to restore missing teeth.

Dental Veneers
If you still have your teeth, but are not happy with them, these might be your answer. Stunning porcelain veneers offer an affordable approach to cosmetic adjustments – uneven color, size or shape. These are very thin shells bonded to the front of the teeth. They beautify unsightly, but structually sound teeth.

Don’t worry about losing your grip on the adult teeth you’ve been enjoying all these years. We have experience and training in many services to meet your dental needs including mini implants, sedation dentistry, dental crowns, and Invisalign.

Schedule your initial consultation at 801-374-0070 to visit us at 3575 N 100 E in Provo, Utah. We are perfectly situated for our neighbors throughout the Lehi, Utah County, and American Fork areas.

Your consultation will include a customized treatment plan for restoring teeth, the cost of dental procedures and a schedule for completing the dental plan created specifically for you. Come with questions and leave with answers.

Cosmetic Dentistry vs. General Dentistry In Provo

Provo Cosmetic Dentistry Hello, We are the team of Dr. Chris Hammond. Welcome to our Provo cosmetic dentistry blog. Today’s article focuses on the difference between general dentistry and cosmetic dentistry.

General dentists in Provo are dedicated to preventing and treating oral disease such as cavities and gum disease. When a problem is diagnosed, let’s say, a cavity between two teeth, a general dentist will assess the best way to restore the tooth involved.

Provo cosmetic dentists perform elective dental procedures that make a smile more attractive. Cosmetic dentistry procedures available at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Provo include teeth whitening, tooth-colored fillings, dental bonding, veneers, inlays, onlays, and dental crowns.

Some Provo dentists, like us, offer both general and cosmetic dentistry procedures. In some cases, there is a cosmetic component to restorative procedures. For example, if a Provo dental patient comes in after receiving an injury that chipped a front tooth, the tooth needs to be restored to prevent decay. The tooth is also less structurally sound, so it is vulnerable to further damage. In addition, the tooth affects the overall appearance of the smile. Depending on the specifics of the damage, there are several of restorative options. Dental bonding, porcelain veneers, and crowns are all used to repair a damaged tooth.

As you can see, there is not always a definitive line between general and cosmetic dentistry. At Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry, our caring team provides a full spectrum of preventative, restorative, and cosmetic dental procedures. We treat Orem area patients of all ages: from toddlers just beginning to get their baby teeth to mature patients who remember the days when many people were afraid of dentists and their whiny drills. (Some of our wonderful elderly Provo patients have crowns that are twice as old as our hygienists.)

Experienced Provo dental professionals who perform pediatric, general, orthodontic, and cosmetic dental procedures can meet all of your family’s dental needs.

If you are looking for a full-service dental practice in the Orem area, we invite you to come into Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Provo, We are located at 3575 N 100 E. To schedule an oral examination or smile makeover consultation, call 801-374-0070.

Express Your Personality With A Smile Makeover

Provo lowest price teeth bleaching

What makes up a perfect smile? White teeth? Straight teeth? Teeth with pleasing proportions relative to one another? A stunning smile is more than the sum of its parts. At Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry, we believe that your perfect smile also contains another element – your unique personality.

What is a smile makeover? Is is a combination of procedures that remedy any problems with your existing smile. First off, we look at the health of your teeth. If you have cavities, we take care of those first. Oral health is paramount.

Then, Dr. Hammond become cosmetic dental artists, using all the cutting-edge treatments available. Modern cosmetic dentistry offers a multitude of tooth restoration treatments. On the least invasive end we have dental bonding and inlays/onlays. These can often be completed in just one visit. Porcelain veneers can remedy small imperfections such as chips. A veneer can also correct the shape of a tooth that is misaligned.

If you have teeth that are not structurally sound, you may need a dental crown. The crowns we provide at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Provo blend perfectly with your existing teeth. No “chiclet” effect where the crown sticks out like a sore thumb.

What if you have a tooth that is completely missing? Ask us about dental implants. This permanent tooth restoration is actually anchored into the jawbone, offering strength, natural function, and protection from bone recession. With a tooth implant, there is no need to damage the two adjacent teeth as is necessary for a dental bridge.

There are a variety of dental braces available for our Provo patients who need orthodontic treatment. Ask us about invisible braces, lingual braces and fast braces.

Perhaps your greatest need is to repair prior dental work performed elsewhere. We can remove old silver fillings and replace with natural tooth colored fillings and replace broken dental crowns.

The crowning touch? Tooth whitening.

5 Smile Makeover Questions For Provo Smiles

How Much Does A Smile Makeover Cost In Provo

If you are considering a multi-procedure smile makeover or extensive restorative dental work, here are four considerations:

All At Once Or Over Time?
At Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry, our Provo smile makeover patients can often receive several (or all) procedures in one visit. It all depends on the specific procedures necessary to achieve your perfect smile. Dr. Hammond develop a unique treatment plan for each patient after an extensive consultation and examination.

Oral Sedation?
Many Utah County and American Fork cosmetic dental patients benefit from sedation dentistry. Conscious sedation is especially helpful for procedures such as multiple wisdom teeth extractions and dental implant placement.

Cost?
We know that cosmetic dentistry is a substantial investment for most Orem dental patients. Some procedures are covered by dental plans, so if you have dental insurance, be sure to find out exactly what is covered. Many Provo residents use flex spending accounts for dental work and reap the tax advantages. Call us at 801-374-0070 to discuss dental financing options in Provo.

Healing Time?
With the latest materials and cosmetic dental techniques, healing times are often minimal. However, some treatments such as bone grafting, soft tissue grafting, root canals, and dental implants often require a short healing period. Consider how the timing of your dental visits and the necessary healing periods will affect your job and family responsibilities.

Aesthetic Results?
At Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Provo our patients experience terrific results when doing smile transformations in phases; however, porcelain restorations are best fabricated in the same “batch” for the most precise color matching.

Call Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry today at 801-374-0070 to schedule a no-pressure cosmetic dental consultation.

Can You Name 9 Dental Specialties?

Lehi Pediatric and Cosmetic Dentistry

Most Lehi people probably know how a pediatric dentist differs from an orthodontist. Some American Fork dental patients may even know the unique focus of endodontists. But few Utah residents probably know that the American Dental Association recognizes nine dental specialties. Today’s post looks at the specific disciplines within the fascinating world of dentistry and the years in which they were formally recognized by the ADA. (If you want a challenge, see if you can name all nine before you continue reading this post.)

Endodontics (1983): This area focuses on “the morphology, physiology and pathology of the human dental pulp and periradicular tissues.”1 If you need a root canal in Provo, you may require the services of an endodontist.

Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (2003): If you want to straighten your teeth, you need an orthodontist. Dentofacial orthopedic specialists correct facial deformities using many of the same types of appliances used in teeth straightening therapy.

Pediatric Dentistry (1995): Lehi pediatric dentists provide dental care for infants, children and teenagers.

Periodontics (1992): “Periodontics is that specialty of dentistry which encompasses the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the supporting and surrounding tissues of the teeth or their substitutes.”1 Periodontal specialists perform crown lengthening, pocket reduction, and soft tissue (gum) grafts.

Prosthodontics (2003): Prosthodontists provide restorative dental procedures including dental implants, crowns, bridges, and dentures. They also perform cosmetic dental treatments including porcelain veneers, crowns, dental bonding, invisible fillings, and teeth bleaching.

Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology (1991): This specialty concerns “the nature, identification, and management of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial regions. It is a science that investigates the causes, processes, and effects of these diseases. The practice of oral pathology includes research and diagnosis of diseases using clinical, radiographic, microscopic, biochemical, or other examinations.”1

Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology
(2001): Oral and maxillofacial radiologists analyze radiographic images (x-rays) for issues of the maxillofacial area.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (1990): Oral surgeons perform surgery on the teeth, jaw, face, and gums. These include facial reconstruction, cleft lip and palate correction, bone grafting, dental implants, and impacted teeth.

Dental Public Health (1976): This discipline focuses on “preventing and controlling dental diseases and promoting dental health through organized community efforts.”1

General dentists and cosmetic dentists in the Provo area are trained in a wide variety of dental procedures. However, sometimes your Orem general dentist will refer you to a local Orem specialist, or include a specialist as part of your treatment team.

Water Fluoridation In Utah Prevents Tooth Decay

Water Fluoridation In Utah Prevents Tooth Decay

Hello! Welcome to our Provo family dentistry blog. Today’s message from Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry concerns fluoride and Utah children’s dental health. We’re Dr. Hammond and we have been practicing dentistry in Provo since 1967.

When I examine a new Provo patient for the first time, I can usually tell whether the person drank fluoride-adjusted municipal water while growing up. Generally, their teeth are healthier than Orem people who had lower fluoride levels in their tap water.

Ideally, adequate fluoride intake combined with proper oral hygiene, good nutrition, and regular dental visits keep teeth healthy and free of decay. However, fluoride also helps teeth remineralize if acids have already compromised the enamel. For decay prevention and teeth strengthening, adequate fluoride is indispensable.

If you have children and your Utah municipal water supply does not have the recommended level of fluoride, you may want to consider giving your kids a fluoride supplement. The fluoride will strengthen the primary teeth that have already erupted and also the adult teeth that are forming.

The American Dental Association supports water fluoridation:

‘More than 65 years ago, on January 25, 1945, Grand Rapids, Michigan became the world’s first city to adjust the level of fluoride in its water supply. Since that time, fluoridation has dramatically improved the oral health of tens of millions of Americans. Community water fluoridation is the single most effective public health measure to prevent tooth decay.’ http://www.ada.org/fluoride.aspx

At Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry, we provide exceptional dental care for all members of the family including general and cosmetic dentistry. We serve the Provo, Utah County, American Fork, and Lehi areas. Ask us about teeth whitening, veneers, crowns, and short-term braces.

If you are interested in children’s fluoride supplements, call Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry at 801-374-0070 to schedule a pediatric dental evaluation.
