Tooth Brushing Basics For Healthy Smiles In Provo

Friday, October 21st, 2011

Provo Teeth Bleaching Why should everyone in Provo brush at least twice a day? Let’s take a look at why this is so important.

Brushing and flossing is the best way to prevent decay.

Brushing with fluoride toothpaste and carefully flossing removes the food from our teeth and inhibits the build up of plaque. If we let food stay on our teeth, the starches in the food will mix with the plaque. This nasty mixture forms an acid which immediately starts drilling into the enamel to form cavities. Brushing can’t get all the spaces between your teeth, so you’ve got to floss also. Brushing and flossing can also be the first step towards bad breath treatment.

Brushing and flossing keeps gums and bone healthy.

If you let gum disease go untreated, you can lose teeth that are cavity-free!

The progression of gum disease (gingivitis) goes like this:

  1. Plaque build-up irritates gums.
  2. Irritated gums pull away from teeth.
  3. Bacteria multiplies in the spaces between the gum and tooth.
  4. The bone holding the tooth is eaten by the bacteria.
  5. Say goodbye to the tooth.

The good news is that gingivitis can be reversed if detected early. The best way to do this is with regular visits to your Provo family dentistry specialist.

Call Hammond & Ellis Aesthetic & General Dentistry at 801-657-5633 to schedule a gum disease evaluation at our office in Provo.

General Dentistry

Provo General Dentistry What is ‘ General Dentistry ‘? Here are a couple definitions, found from around the web:

The World Health Organization defines General Dentistry as “the science and art of preventing, diagnosing and treating diseases, injuries and malformations of the teeth, jaws and mouth”.

According to Wikipedia :

A dentist is a healthcare professional qualified to practice dentistry after graduating with a degree of either Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS), Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD), Bachelor of Dentistry (BDent), Bachelor of Dental Science (BDSc), or Bachelor of Dental Surgery/Chirurgiae (BDS) or (BChD) or equivalent.

In most western countries, to become a qualified dentist one must usually complete at least 4 years of postgraduate study. Generally, 2 years of clinical experience working with patients in an educational setting are required.

Provo Children’s Dental Care and Thumb Sucking

Friday, July 29th, 2011

Open Bite For years, Provo parents have been warned that thumb-sucking can cause future dental problems for their thumb-loving toddlers. One of these problems is a type of malocclusion called an open bite.

An open bite occurs when the front teeth in the lower and upper jaw have been moved forward; often to the extent that they do not meet when the mouth is closed. In most cases, an open bite has been caused by thumb sucking, but pacifiers and tongue thrusting can also move teeth out of alignment.

Tongue thrusting refers to an abnormal swallowing action in which the tongue is pushed forward during swallowing. Normally, the tongue is on the roof of the mouth and the teeth closed completely when swallowing. A tongue-thrusting habit can develop due to factors other than thumb sucking, though this is a common cause. Allergies, large tonsils, tongue size, jaw angle, muscular problems, frequent sore throats; anything that makes swallowing difficult, can result in a tongue-thrusting habit.

At Hammond & Ellis Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Provo, we diagnose bite problems in young Provo dental clients such as underbites, overbites, crossbites and open bites. If dental treatment is started early in a child’s life, many bite issues and their associated problems can be prevented.

Call Hammond & Ellis Aesthetic & General Dentistry at 801-657-5633 to schedule a dental examination for your toddler or child. If you need dental treatment for your child and do not have dental plan insurance, talk to us about financing options.

Hammond & Ellis Aesthetic & General Dentistry offers comprehensive cosmetic and family dentistry care for families in the greater Provo area. Because our friendly staff puts our youngest patients at ease, your child can grow up without fearing visits to their Provo family dentist.  For our older patients, we also offer cosmetic dentistry services such as dental veneers and teeth whitening.

Pediatric Dentistry

Friday, March 25th, 2011

If you have children in the Orem area, there is no better time to consider pediatric dentistry than right now.

The best time to start your Orem children on a pediatric dentistry program is when their teeth first appear. This may seem a bit early, however it is a great time to become acquainted with family dentistry options, learn training techniques for teaching your children, and assessing the health of your child’s teeth before problems begin.

We can also help you identify pediatric dentistry programs and services in the Orem area, for you child. If you have questions about pediatric dentistry, please give us a call at Hammond & Ellis Aesthetic & General Dentistry. We are Drs. Chris Hammond & Chad Ellis, and our friendly and professional staff will be more than happy to talk with you about pediatric dentistry.

Remember: The best time to consider pediatric dentistry is while you have options. Waiting until problems appear reduces your options and misses the very reason we are concerned about pediatric dentistry; to help your child grow healthy and strong teeth that will last a lifetime.

Bring your questions to our friendly and professional staff at Hammond & Ellis Aesthetic & General Dentistry. We are located at 3575 North 100 East, Suite 200 in Provo, Utah.

We are looking forward to seeing you, and to discussing pediatric dentistry with you and your children.  We also provide cosmetic dentistry and general dentistry services.

Choosing A Dentist In Provo

Choosing A Dentist In Provo The American Dental Association offers some welcome advice for choosing a family dentistry practice in Provo. We have already talked about how word of mouth is an important factor in how many people find a dentist. Here are some things you should look for in an Provo dentist:

Location is always a factor when choosing a dentist in Provo. If you live in the Provo, Utah area, there are many options, and most Provo locations are not too far out of the way. While location plays an important role in convenience, many people are willing to drive a little farther for a better experience with their Provo dentist.

Relationship is a strong factor. Your Provo dentist should be approachable, and should make you feel comfortable when you are in the dentist chair. After all, your Provo dentist will be working very close with you to help you achieve a high level of oral hygiene; you most certainly will want to have a good, professional, comfortable relationship with your Provo dentist and the dental office staff.

Preventing Tooth Decay in Utah County

Wednesday, October 6th, 2010

Preventing Tooth Decay in Utah In Utah County, tooth decay is one of the most common childhood problems, yet tooth decay also affect adults. Hammond & Ellis Aesthetic & General Dentistry serves people from 20 to 80 years old to help fight tooth decay.

Bacteria are a common cause of tooth decay. Bacteria live in your mouth and combine with plaque and acids to break down the enamel coating on your teeth. The breakdown of your tooth enamel can often result in the development of small holes in your teeth which are known as cavities. The breaking down of your tooth enamel is known as tooth decay, and it is a serious dental problem for children and adults in Utah County.

Utah County tooth decay is typically a result of diet and oral hygiene choices. When sticky foods are consumed and allowed to sit on the teeth, or foods full of sugars and starches are consumed frequently throughout the day, tooth decay can result. Foods to avoid include soda and sugary chewing gum; these foods tend to stay around for a while and create an environment where bacteria thrive. To help prevent tooth decay, simply limit sugary and starchy foods between meals. Also, brushing at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, flossing at least once a day, and visiting your local Utah County family dentistry practice for regular check ups and cleanings will help prevent tooth decay.

If you are experiencing pain from tooth decay and need dental work done, we can help you at Hammond & Ellis Aesthetic & General Dentistry .  We provide treatments such as dental implants and porcelain crowns.

Hello, we are Drs. Chris Hammond & Chad Ellis.  We work at Hammond & Ellis Aesthetic & General Dentistry located at 3575 North 100 East, Suite 200 Provo, Utah . Tooth decay is a preventable dental problem, and we can help. We will be happy to meet you, and to give you an idea of the many ways we can help you prevent tooth decay and avoid a more costly or even painful ailment.  Give us a call at 801-657-5633.
