Children’s Dentistry

Children's Dentistry For years, the American Academy of Pediatrics advised parents to begin children’s dentist visits before the third birthday. The AAP now advises American Fork and Lehi parents to take their toddler to their family dentist before their first birthday, or about six months after their first tooth appears.

Why? Prevention, prevention, prevention! Sadly, Utah County dentists find advanced tooth decay in very young children.

High-risk children should be seen as early as possible. Following are some of the risk factors:

  • Sleeping with a bottle
  • Drinking juice continually during the day
  • Abnormal tooth development
  • Thumb sucking
  • Tooth grinding
  • A mother with significant tooth decay
  • Other health problems

To talk to us about your child’s oral health, call 801-374-0070. At Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry, we pamper our youngest patients and their Provo parents. We would love to serve you with the most advanced dental care in Provo.

10 Terrific Tooth Tips From Hammond Aesthetic & Family Dentistry

10 Terrific Tooth Tips From Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry

1. If you have kids and your municipal water supply does not have the recommended level of fluoride, talk to your pediatrician about fluoride supplements. Fluoride strengthens both the teeth you can see and the ones still forming in the jaw.
2. Set a timer when you brush to make sure you spend at least two minutes thoroughly (but gently!) cleaning all surfaces. Don’t forget your tongue – it provides a cozy home for bacteria to flourish.
3. Floss before you brush so that tooth bristles can better reach between teeth.
4. If you can’t brush after a meal, chew some sugarless gum with xylitol. Xylitol may curb the growth of bacteria on your teeth to reduce plaque formation.
5. Eat carbohydrates with meals instead of alone as snacks. More saliva is generated while eating a meal and this can lessen the effects of carbs sitting on your teeth.
6. An oral fluoride rinse used right before bedtime adds an extra measure of decay deterrence. Fluoride rinses (not traditional mouthwash) work best when swished over teeth for at least thirty seconds after flossing and brushing. After spitting it out, don’t rinse with water. Let the residue protect and strengthen your enamel all night long. This is especially important for kids – just make sure they don’t swallow it.
7. If you have diabetes, it is important to understand that unhealthy blood sugar levels can increase your risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Your dentist can help you maintain oral health in spite of your condition. If you have already experienced dental complications related to diabetes, schedule a consultation with Dr. Hammond.
8. Beware of the dental risks of chronic dry mouth (xerostomia). Continual saliva production is essential for keeping the mouth lubricated, washing the food from tooth surfaces, and neutralizing the acid caused by plaque. Decongestants, blood pressure medications, antidepressants, and painkillers are some of the medications that can cause dry mouth. Dr. Hammond can help you protect your teeth if you live with this unpleasant condition.
9. Wearing a mouthguard when you participate in sports can prevent tooth injury. Many Provo dentists offer custom mouthguards that fit perfectly.
10. If you are looking for an excellent dentist in the Provo area, we invite you to schedule an appointment with Drs. Dr. Hammond at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry. At Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry, we provide gentle, quality care for children and adults. Talk to us about preventative, restorative, cosmetic, or children’s dentistry. We look forward to serving you.

Is Orem Flossing out of Fear?

Is Orem Flossing out of Fear?

Most Orem and Provo men and women know that flossing is an important part of oral health. The value of this simple yet vital exercise in oral hygiene has been shown time and time again. But does fear have to play a role in Orem’s commitment to the practice?

Flossing offers a chance to remove bits and pieces that a toothbrush will undoubtedly miss. But, being afraid of the ‘cavity bugs,’ ‘mouth germies,’ or the ‘dental bogeyman’ may still not compel Provo folks to floss regularly. The fear of gingivitis and gum disease or crowns and fillings from cavities work for a week or so after a cleaning, but may not instill a lasting habit between teeth cleanings.

At Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Provo, we encourage our dental patients to look at flossing as an opportunity to start fresh just as showering and dressing for the day is a positive way to increase motivation and initiate flossing into your established routine. Flossing can be a positive opportunity to remind yourself to smile and feel happy as you approach your day. Flossing could be a time to think about the foods you are putting into your mouth and consider what improvements could be made to your diet. Living in health-conscious communities such as Utah County, American Fork, or Lehi can also help motivate you to floss regularly. The fresh air you breath on a short walk will feel smooth as your run your tongue along the ridges of your teeth near the gums.

It doesn’t have to be about fear! Call us at: 801-374-0070 The caring dental staff at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry knows that flossing can be a concern for their Provo dental patients and a brightened patient is always better than a frightened one. At Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry, we offer many ways to enhance your smile and self-confidence. Make a cosmetic dental appointment today to consider whether sedation dentistry can lighten your look, Invisalign can influence your flair, and porcelain veneers or dental crowns can ease your anxiety. We aim to make it a fantastic experience!

Ouch! Are Your Teeth Sensitive In Provo?

Are Your Teeth Sensitive In Provo?

For those of you in the Provo area who feel pain when you sip your morning coffee or who cringe each time you brush or floss, Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry is here for you.

Dr. Hammond have been treating this common problem since 1967.

The first line of defense against tooth sensitivity is proper oral hygiene. Incorrect brushing and over-brushing can result in receding gums, which leads to the exposure of microscopic tubules in the dentin. When these tubules are exposed, acidic, hot, cold, and sticky foods can then reach the nerve cells in the teeth causing discomfort.

Here in our Provo dentistry practice, our knowledgeable staff can determine if your brushing style is contributing to your tooth sensitivity and get you on your way to proper oral care habits.

Dr. Hammond usually recommend an over-the-counter desensitizing toothpaste that will alleviate tooth pain after several applications. Most Provo Wal-Mart stores carry it. However, some Provo patients may need in-office procedures such as fluoride gel treatments available at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry.

Don’t worry if you have sensitive teeth in Provo and want to have your teeth whitened, here at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry, we can determine which professional tooth whitening or at-home whitening procedures will work for you.

Call our Provo cosmetic dental office today to get relief from your sensitive teeth.

Utah County: Is Your Low-Carb Diet Giving You Dragon Breath?

Utah County: Is Your Low-Carb Diet Giving You Dragon Breath?

Many residents in the Utah County, American Fork, and Lehi area mistakenly believe that all bad breath is linked to insufficient brushing. The truth is that there is a myriad of causes of halitosis. Your Provo dentist can help you identify the cause of your problem and discuss how to cure bad breath.

What you eat may have something to do with it. Because foods begin to be digested the second they enter your mouth, and because they are absorbed and distributed throughout the body, you probably will be able to smell strong foods like onions and garlic long after you’ve eaten them.

Therefore, using a mouthwash from your local Provo drugstore will only mask the smell. Constantly sucking on breath mints is also not a good idea. This may bring additional oral problems – especially if the mints have sugar. If you want real relief, you may need to avoid the strong foods altogether.

Also, many dieters in and around Orem find that their diet regimen is making it harder to keep their mouth fresh and clean. Low-carb and no-carb diets promote fat burning, but the side effect of bad breath can be caused by the chemicals released during this process. Increasing water intake can help alleviate this.

Lastly, flossing regularly is often the key to truly fresh breath. Many American Fork folks don’t realize how much food can be stuck between their teeth, and this food can cause halitosis if it isn’t removed. More importantly, the food particles turn into plaque which causes cavities and gum disease.

We’re Dr. Hammond of Provo
. Our practice provides general, restorative, and cosmetic dentistry to residents in the Orem area. We want our patients to have the best oral health possible, and that includes fresh breath. Tooth Whitening and Your Dentist

Tooth whitening has become one of the most popular dental procedures in Utah. It seems that everyone in Provo is whitening their teeth to help their smiles look younger and brighter. Many consumers in the Provo and Orem area are turning to over-the-counter solutions to whiten their teeth, however their can be dangers and pitfalls to this approach.

Here is some basic advice on tooth whitening from Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry:

First, we encourage you to visit our office in Provo before starting a tooth whitening system. It is a good idea to have your teeth checked and analyzed before starting a tooth whitening program. Tooth whitening is not for everyone, and depends on your dental history.

Dr. Hammond at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry can help you determine whether your teeth can be whitened safely and effectively. We can also recommend tooth whitening solutions that will work best for you. Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry is a good place to start for this important decision.

There are many pitfalls to be aware of when whitening your teeth. Over-the-counter teeth whitening products available in the Provo area will provide varying degrees of effectiveness on your teeth. If used improperly, tooth whitening solutions can cause problems including tooth sensitivity, over whitening, damage to your tooth enamel, and irregular coloration. Whitening too much can even have a reverse effect, making your teeth look gray.

Most tooth whitening product manufacturers recommend that you visit your local Provo dentist when things go wrong with your over-the-counter tooth whitening solution. We recommend you begin with the caring professionals at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry to get started with a tooth whitening solution that will give you the best tooth whitening results.

Our office is located at 3575 N 100 E, Provo, Utah 84604. Please give us a call or stop by to make an appointment to discuss your tooth whitening plans. We are eager to help you make the best decision about your tooth whitening.

Our caring staff is available to discuss tooth whitening solutions, explain tooth whitening options, and check your teeth to make sure you will get the tooth whitening results you want.

Dental Sealants

Orem Cosmetic Dentistry Dental sealants are a thin coat of clear resin that is applied to the biting surfaces of teeth, usually the rear molars. The back teeth are more prone to cavities because is difficult to reach them with a tooth brush and the surfaces contain pits and grooves that easily trap bacteria. It is hard for many adults to clean their back molars and almost impossible for our young Provo, Orem, and Utah County children.

Dental sealants fill in the pits and grooves on the rear molars to create a smooth surface. Orem family dentists most often recommend sealants for children’s permanent back teeth, though sometimes they are used for adults, too.

Provo parents may not realize how quickly a cavity can form in a young child’s mouth. Many Provo area kids that we see develop cavities even before they start kindergarten! It is vital that our local parents start regular dental visits early. The American Dental Association advises that a child’s initial dental exam take place soon after the first tooth erupts, but no later than the toddler’s first birthday.

Dental sealants protect teeth that have no decay (primary prevention) and also prevent further decay progression in teeth that show very early signs of disease (secondary prevention).

At Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry, we take special care of our pediatric dental clients. We want each child’s dental visits to be pleasant and painless so they will never develop a fear of the dentist. We advise parents on the specific dental issues associated with each stage of childhood. Ask us about fluoride, sports mouthguards, and orthodontic treatment.

We are Dr. Hammond of Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry. We don’t believe that childhood cavities are unavoidable. Call our office at 801-374-0070 to schedule a dental exam.

We provide comprehensive restorative and cosmetic dentistry for Orem people of all ages. Our office is located at 3575 N 100 E in Provo. You can learn more about our practice at https://www.cosmeticdentistryutahcounty.com/about-us/
