You Won’t Be Out Cold (Unless You Want To Be!)

Sedation Dentistry Lehi

Does your heart start pounding at the mere thought of having a cavity filled? Do you get sweaty palms when you drive by a dental practice?

Many Provo residents who have improved their smile with cosmetic dentistry or underwent extensive restoration care chose to use sedation. Though the terms “sleep dentistry” and “oral conscious sedation” are often used interchangeably, they are not identical. Let’s review the three main types of sedation used in dentistry.

Nitrous Oxide
The first level uses nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas” as it is usually called. Nitrous oxide has been used in Provo cosmetic dental offices for generations because it is safe and effective. It goes to work at the first inhalation, relaxes the patient during the treatment, but wears off quickly after the mask is pulled off. If you need a little help to get through dental treatment, but don’t want to be knocked out cold, nitrous may be the best option.

Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral sedatives don’t start working as speedily as nitrous oxide, but they help most patients achieve a deeper level of tranquility. These medications, however, do not usually cause complete unconsciousness. Thus, oral sedatives and nitrous oxide are used in “conscious” sedation. Two of the most common sedatives used by Provo dentists are diazepam and triazolam.

IV Sedation
IV sedation uses medications similar to those used in surgery and results in true “sleep dentistry.” Most patients are completely oblivious to what is going on in their mouth. IV sedation is often used for care such as root canals, wisdom teeth extractions, and multi-procedure smile makeovers. (The sedation will wear off shortly after the procedure, so you won’t need a handsome prince’s kiss to wake you up.)

Don’t Let Poor Oral Health Take You Out Of The Game

Utah County cosmetic dental and tooth implants

It’s hard to win a gold medal if you have a toothache. A recent study cited in the British Journal of Sports Medicine explored how poor oral health affects athletic performance at the elite level.

“More than 40% of athletes were bothered by their oral health with 28% reporting an impact on quality of life and 18% on training and performance.”1

The dental troubles experienced by Olympians and professional athletes are not any different than those found in the general population: tooth decay, dental erosion, periodontal disease, and inflammation around partially erupted wisdom teeth. It’s vital to note that these troubles are largely preventable.

Athletes are also at risk for mouth injuries suffered while competing or training.  Tooth trauma can prevent injured athletes from competing in the short term and cause ongoing complications down the road.

Whether you are an Olympic runner or a busy working mom who seems to be running all the time, dental health affects your overall health and quality of life. Don’t let your performance suffer because of poor oral health.

If it has been a while since you have had a dental exam, we invite you to schedule a check-up and cleaning by calling Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry at 801-374-0070.

Let’s Work Together To Keep Your Smile Healthy And Beautiful

low cost tooth bleaching Orem

Here at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry we approach all your dental needs from two separate angles – what we can do in our office and what you can do at home. For example, tooth whitening and correcting discoloration can be treated in our office or at home. Here in the office there are safe and effective methods for lightening yellowed or stained tooth enamel. At-home whitening methods are also safe and effective and sometimes more affordable.

Additionally, we advise you regarding food and drink choices that can affect your whitened smile. Be aware of staining culprits such as coffee, tea, tobacco and harsh sodas. We understand that avoiding these items altogether is not an easy lifestyle change. Nor do we expect it.

Awareness and precaution can make a big difference. Rinsing your mouth out with water after drinking a dark or sugary drink can cut down on the contact your teeth have with such substances. Prolonged exposure to sugar can lead to buildup of plaque and tartar and prolonged exposure to staining substances can lead to stronger staining and discoloration.

If you are interested in making improvements to your smile and creating a more confident appearance for your professional career or personal relationships, please pick up the phone and contact the awesome staff at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry today 801-374-0070. Dr. Chris Hammond, DDS, takes pride in providing caring care and expertise when treating patients.

Come discover the personal attention with mini implants, the patient and steady hand with dental crowns, the wise and thorough instruction relating to sedation dentistry. Once you’ve scheduled a consultation, make the easy drive to 3575 N 100 E Ste 200 Provo, Utah 84604 and settle in for guidance that will make your daily oral care and lifestyle choices productive and meaningful.

When it comes to hygiene and healthy teeth we are a practice that wants to see you as little as possible. (It’s not that we don’t love you – we just want you to have a healthy smile!) If we only see you twice a year for regular checkups then we’ve done our job. Check out our website at https://www.cosmeticdentistryutahcounty.com/about-us/ or come in for an evaluation and recommendations.

Dr. Hammond provides the full spectrum of dental services from cosmetic dentistry to family dentistry to dental implants. And we welcome patients from all over the area, from Orem to Lehi and from Utah County to American Fork.

Peace Begins With A Smile

Utah County cosmetic dental veneers

Mother Theresa once said “Peace begins with a smile.” Perhaps that peace should start with the person who is smiling. How do you feel about your smile? Are you at peace with it? Are you proud to flash a wide, happy grin? Do you believe it is beautiful? Does it express your best self? Let’s talk about your smile.

Bright eyes and bright smiles are best served clear and clean. Regular check ups with your local dental provider can prevent runaway decay and pricey corrections. Stay at peace with your smile by scheduling regular dental visits to avoid any future oral problems.

Rest assured that there are ways to redo what nature has given you or cosmetically remedy problems that have affected your once-pleasant smile. Talk to a cosmetic dentist to learn how you can achieve a smile you can be at peace with. For information about veneers, bridges, dental implants, Invisalign braces, visit https://www.cosmeticdentistryutahcounty.com/about-us/.

We are your local, experienced dental practice and provide quality service and products. We are enthusiastic about creating the best dental experience possible. If dental visits make you feel the exact opposite of peaceful, let’s talk about oral conscious sedation. With a little help, you can get through your treatment with minimal anxiety and be at peace with your smile for years to come.

We’ve been providing services such as cosmetic dentistry, family dentistry, and dental implants since 1967 to Provo and nearby communities such as Lehi, Utah County, and American Fork. When It’s Better Not To Brush

enamel erosion Orem

Cuts heal. Bruises fade. Broken bones mend. The body’s ability to heal itself is truly amazing. But tooth enamel is different. When it’s gone, it’s gone.

Though thin and partially translucent, tooth enamel is the hardest substance in the body and has the essential job of protecting teeth from constant use and the continual assault of chemicals in food and drink. Enamel also shields tooth nerves from hot and cold food and beverages. That’s why enamel loss often causes tooth sensitivity.

The team at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry encourages our Orem area patients to protect their tooth enamel for a lifetime of dental health.

This may seem counterintuitive, but sometimes it is better NOT to brush immediately after eating. Specifically, after eating acidic items. The acid weakens the enamel which can be further weakened by brushing. Waiting 60 minutes will allow the acid to dilute. Rinsing immediately after eating acidic foods is useful, however, because it washes away some food particles and speeds up the dilution of the acid.

Some Provo dental patients don’t realize that dry mouth can cause or exacerbate enamel erosion. The calcium and phosphate in saliva protects your enamel. When there is little saliva, the enamel is left unprotected. Chewing stimulates saliva production but constant snacking is not the answer for dry mouth. Chewing sugar-free gum and sipping water frequently can stimulate saliva production between meals without increasing the risk of decay or upping your calorie intake.

Not surprisingly, tooth grinding wears enamel away. If you are one of the many Provo residents who grinds their teeth at night, it’s vital to get a mouthguard ASAP. People who grind their teeth are at a high risk for enamel erosion and the decay that can follow. Athletes should also protect their teeth on the playing field with a mouthguard. For more information, meet with Drs. Dr. Hammond at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry about custom mouthguards.

If you sip soda, tea, or coffee all day, we suggest you switch to water to halt any enamel erosion that has already occurred. It may be a hard change to make – but if you are successful – your teeth will thank you for it.

Using teeth as tools can harm enamel, as well. Take a moment to fetch scissors before tearing open a package or ripping duct tape with your teeth. Do you really want to take a chance on chipping a tooth just to open a package of lunchmeat?

Chewing ice and hard candy can also damage enamel. If you simply must have sugar, soft candy is best as long as it is not left to sit on teeth for long period of time. If your molars are packed with gummy candy all day, you will develop cavities which erodes enamel just as effectively as chipping it with hard candy. Many of the old-school hard candies we enjoyed as kids now come in soft versions. Enjoy them sparingly because constant sugar is bad for teeth. Period.

If you have already experienced enamel erosion or other dental problems, Drs. Dr. Hammond can help you protect what is left. To schedule an exam, contact Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Provo at 801-374-0070!

How Bright Can You Shine, Provo?

Bright Smiles In American Fork

Hello Provo! Do you want brighter, whiter teeth? Most American Fork residents notice their teeth dulling as the years go by, but some foods, drinks, and even mouthwashes can stain teeth at any age.

OTC tooth whitening products like kits, strips, or toothpastes may slightly lighten stains, but for a truly remarkable smile, see Dr. Hammond!

If you have dental veneers, bonding, or bridges, teeth whitening bleach will not influence the stains and your whitened natural teeth may make your dental work look even duller in comparison. At Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry, we can advise you about new dental work, including veneers or bondings, if these have discolored with age.

Remember, anything that can stain a white t-shirt can stain teeth.

Fortunately, brushing after meals can keep stains at bay, however after consuming acidic foods or drinks, just rinse your mouth with water. Brushing right away can erode enamel.

Provo in-office teeth whitening takes about an hour and bleaches teeth to a whiter-than-ever brilliance. Professional take-home whitening kits are also available at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry and can produce outstanding results over time.

Provo Dental News: Poor Oral Health And Heart Disease

Top Provo Family Dentists Attention Provo dental patients: brushing twice daily may help lower your risk of heart disease. Utah scientists, dentists, and cardiologists have known for many years that there is a link between inflammation in the mouth (gum disease) and heart problems. However, a recent study analyzed oral health habits and heart disease risk. Science Daily reported on the study, which was published in the British Medical Journal.

We quote from the Science Daily article:

“The authors, led by Professor Richard Watt from University College London, analyzed data from over 11,000 adults who took part in a Scottish Health Survey. The research team analyzed data about lifestyle behaviors such as smoking, physical activity, and oral health routines.”

“Once the data was adjusted for established cardio risk factors, the researchers found that participants who reported less frequent toothbrushing had a 70 percent extra risk of heart disease compared to individuals who brushed their teeth twice a day.”

We are Dr. Hammond DDS of Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry. The Scottish survey is one of many that confirms the link between oral health and overall health. Simply put: you aren’t healthy unless your gums and teeth are healthy.

It doesn’t matter if you are a lean Provo distance runner with a pulse of fifteen beats a minute and a blood pressure of 100 over 60. It doesn’t matter if you are an Orem vegan who has eaten a nutritionally balanced, low-fat diet for the past five years. If you have inflamed gums and tooth decay, you are at risk for problems in other areas of your body.

The phone number for Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry is 801-374-0070. If you have concerns about your oral health, I invite you to schedule an examination today.

Perhaps your teeth and gums are healthy but you wish your smile was more attractive. We can help you! We offer complete smile redesigns. Porcelain veneers, crowns, inlays/onlays, and orthodontia are all available to solve any cosmetic problems you wish to correct.

If you have a small child who has not visited a pediatric dentist in Provo yet, now is the time. My caring team and I will help keep your child’s smile beautiful for life.
