3 Ways to Minimize Candy Intake at Halloween

Orem dentist

1. Lock yourself in a closet.
2. Sew your mouth shut.
3. Wear a shock collar that’s sensitive to sugar particles.

At Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry we understand how hard it is to avoid sweets altogether at Halloween and other sugar-filled holidays. We encourage both unfettered joy and healthy living for all of our Provo patients.

Moderation in candy intake can help with the prevention of dental caries (cavities), but so can consistent brushing and flossing and regular cleanings and checkups at your Orem family dentist. Keeping the mouth clean and being meticulous about oral hygiene are strong indicators for a happy mouth.

We’re not here to tell our Provo and Utah County patients to avoid sugar altogether. We’re not even here to tell you just to sneak a little. Eat as much as your child will let you; just be sure and brush thoroughly – same as any other time of year. Keep in mind that eating a candy bar and then brushing is better than sucking on a lollipop for a half hour.

When it comes to caring for Provo, Utah’s teeth and cosmetic dentistry needs, Dr. Hammond work tirelessly to make quality sedation dentistry, porcelain veneers, and mini implants available to this entire Utah community. Services such as dental crowns and Invisalign really set us apart from the competition. If we can help you with cosmetic dentistry or dental implants, then we’ve done our job!

Be Wise About Your Wisdom Teeth, Orem

Dental Services Orem

Hi, We’re Dr. Hammond, and today in the Orem dental blog, we will be discussing the often misunderstood subject of wisdom teeth.

Wisdom teeth are sometimes called the third molars because they are even farther back in the mouth than the two sets of regular molars we all have. These four teeth usually erupt when a person is eighteen or nineteen.

Many dentists in the Orem area recommend that wisdom teeth be removed to prevent misplacement in the mouth.

If a wisdom tooth doesn’t fully erupt, it may cause an opening in the gums that can attract bacteria and become infected. Some wisdom teeth are so misplaced that they can actually cause problems with the jaw bone. Both of these conditions cause severe pain.

If you are in the Orem area and are wondering if your wisdom teeth need to be removed, call us today at 801-374-0070 to schedule an appointment. We can assess the placement of your wisdom teeth and discuss a treatment plan.

We can also answer any questions you have about smile makeovers. Because there are so many quick and effective cosmetic dentistry procedures available, such as invisible braces, veneers, teeth whitening, and dental implants, anyone in Orem can have a perfect smile. I love giving my Orem area patients the smiles they’ve always wanted.

Thanks for visiting the dental blog, and keep Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry in mind for your cosmetic dental needs. We offer:

We hope to see you soon!

Tooth Knocked Out? Call Us ASAP!

General Dentistry Orem

It may sound like a catastrophe to many Orem area dental patients, but having a tooth knocked out doesn’t always mean you’ll need cosmetic dentistry to fix your smile. If you can keep a cool head and remember a few simple instructions, chances are your tooth can be salvaged.

The most important things for Orem residents to do if they’ve had a tooth knocked out is to find the tooth, handle it carefully and keep it in the best condition possible so their dentist can reinsert it properly.

Do not handle the tooth by the root, be careful to only touch the crown. It’s okay to gently rinse the tooth in water, but don’t scrub it or remove any tissue fragments from the tooth.

If it is possible, the best place for the tooth to be held is back in the socket (placed there gently, of course). Holding the tooth between the lip and gum or under the tongue is good too, just be careful not to swallow. If neither of these is an option, place the tooth in a cup of milk.

Next, you’ll want to get to your Orem family dentistry office as soon as possible. Most teeth that can be reinserted by a dentist within an hour can be saved.

We’re Dr. Hammond, cosmetic and general dentists near Orem. If you are looking for quality dental care in the Provo, Orem, or Utah County area, we hope you’ll give us a call at 801-374-0070. We offer cosmetic dentistry, sedation dentistry, porcelain veneers, complete smile makeovers, and Invisalign clear braces.

Do You Have Sore Gums?

Affordable Provo Dentistry Every Orem general dentistry patient’s mouth provides a cozy home for over 600 types of bacteria. If you are diligent about oral hygiene and have healthy gums, these microbes usually don’t affect your health. However, if you have gum disease, bacteria can enter your bloodstream through your gums and cause problems.

Gingivitis is the term for the mild gum disease. At Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry, we routinely discover gingivitis in Orem area clients who are not even aware they have the condition.

The first signs of gingivitis are swollen, sore gums.

It is important for our Orem dental patients to understand that it is not normal for gums to bleed when they are brushed or flossed. If you haven’t had an oral examination in a while and live in the Orem area, call Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry at 801-374-0070. Dr. Hammond thoroughly exams teeth and gums and takes time to discuss the results and recommendations with each Orem family dentistry patient.

Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry is a full-service dental practice at 3575 N 100 E, Ste 200, Provo, UT. We provide comprehensive general and cosmetic dentistry for clients who live in Orem and the nearby communities.

During your dentist consultation, we can discuss any cosmetic or restorative procedures in which you are interested. Some of the Orem procedures that we use to create perfect smiles are porcelain veneers, clear braces, dental implants and tooth whitening. Our hygienists are skilled professionals who perform the ultimate in dental deep-cleanings.

Oral health and overall health go hand in hand. Schedule a dental consultation today by calling 801-374-0070 or visiting us online at https://www.cosmeticdentistryutahcounty.com.

An Air-dried Toothbrush Is A Healthy Toothbrush, Orem

An Air-dried Toothbrush Is A Healthy Toothbrush Orem

Today in our Provo dental blog we will highlight some of the simple things you can do with your toothbrush to keep your mouth as clean and healthy as possible.

One of the most important habits Orem residents can form is to always allow their toothbrush to completely air dry between uses. The best way to let the toothbrush air dry is by placing it in a toothbrush holder on the counter with the bristles pointing up. This method of storage is much better than sticking it away in a drawer since it will take longer to dry in there.

Also, when you travel away from the Utah County, American Fork, or Lehi area, make sure your toothbrush is dry before you seal it away in a travel container.

A good strategy for Provo residents to make sure their toothbrush has ample time to dry is to buy two toothbrushes at your Orem drugstore. Then alternate between the two so each has time to fully dry out between uses.

And Orem dental patients should remember to replace their toothbrush (or toothbrushes) every 3 to 4 months, or sooner if they’ve had a cold!

Hi. We’re Dr. Hammond, a team of dentists in Provo. We want our patients to have the best oral health possible. At Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry we offer the following services:

Sedation dentistry
Invisalign
Mini implants
Dental crowns

We are currently accepting new Orem patients and the caring staff here would be happy to answer any questions you have about teeth whitening, veneers, bonding, or other cosmetic dentistry procedures.

“Have Your Dessert, Provo”

Have Your Dessert Provo

Your Provo dentist knows that it’s too much to ask that you never indulge in sugary treats, but they will tell you that eating sweets at certain times is better for your teeth than others. For instance, when you eat a full meal, your saliva production increases. This helps to rinse food particles from your mouth as well as neutralize the acids that cause plaque.

This is great news for dessert lovers in the Orem, Utah County, and Provo areas because it means that sweets consumed after meals have a lower risk to your teeth because your mouth is already in optimum cleansing mode.

Provo dentists agree that sweets after meals are preferable to sweets eaten between meals as snacks.

Also remember that what sweets you eat can be as important as when you eat them. Provo dentists are constantly reminding their dental patients that sticky candies stay on your teeth for a long time, even when your saliva is flowing. And hard candies that you suck on for an extended time give bacteria a perfect environment to create enamel-weakening acids.

We are Dr. Hammond, and we are a team of dentists in Provo. Our practice is called Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry and is located at 3575 N 100 E in Provo.

Our caring staff is here to help you have the healthiest and most beautiful smile possible. We provide general and cosmetic dentistry procedures such as tooth whitening, veneers, short term braces, inlays and onlays.

We are currently accepting new patients, call today to book an appointment!

Don’t Let Poor Oral Health Take You Out Of The Game

Utah County cosmetic dental and tooth implants

It’s hard to win a gold medal if you have a toothache. A recent study cited in the British Journal of Sports Medicine explored how poor oral health affects athletic performance at the elite level.

“More than 40% of athletes were bothered by their oral health with 28% reporting an impact on quality of life and 18% on training and performance.”1

The dental troubles experienced by Olympians and professional athletes are not any different than those found in the general population: tooth decay, dental erosion, periodontal disease, and inflammation around partially erupted wisdom teeth. It’s vital to note that these troubles are largely preventable.

Athletes are also at risk for mouth injuries suffered while competing or training.  Tooth trauma can prevent injured athletes from competing in the short term and cause ongoing complications down the road.

Whether you are an Olympic runner or a busy Provo working mom who seems to be running all the time, dental health affects your overall health and quality of life. Don’t let your performance suffer because of poor oral health.

If it has been a while since you have had a dental exam, we invite you to schedule a check-up and cleaning by calling Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry at 801-374-0070.

Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry is located at 3575 N 100 E in Provo, Utah. We provide general and cosmetic dental procedures including dental implants and porcelain veneers. You can read more about our services at https://www.cosmeticdentistryutahcounty.com/patient-services/.

The Gift Of Oral Health In Orem

The Gift Of Oral Health In Orem

Many dental patients in the Utah County, American Fork, and Lehi areas may wonder why, with all the advances in dental medicine, we still send you home with a complimentary toothbrush and roll of floss. It’s true, they do seem a little old-fashioned in our high-tech world, but don’t let their simple design fool you. These tools are the best bet to prevent tooth decay, plaque build-up, and gum disease for Provo dental patients!

When done properly and consistently, brushing and flossing are an essential part of everyday oral hygiene. Brushing, which should be done at least twice a day, can be done effectively with any type of toothbrush. There is no need to pay a bundle for a fancy electric toothbrush from your Orem WalMart, just brush your teeth in small, circular motions for 2-3 minutes making sure to reach all the surfaces.

Flossing should be done once a day and is important for reaching the areas where a toothbrush cannot. A wide variety of floss can be found at Utah County, American Fork, and Lehi drugstores, so find one you like.

We’re Dr. Hammond, an experienced Provo dentist, and I want to help you enjoy your dental visits and adore your smile.

Our caring staff loves sending our Orem and American Fork area patients away with a new toothbrush and floss, but we also find it rewarding to see our patients gain renewed confidence with a smile makeover.

We’d love to answer any questions you have about cosmetic dentistry such as tooth whitening, veneers, dental implants, or any other dental health topic.

Fun Floss Facts For Utah County Smiles

American Fork after hours dental

It’s clear that for the majority of Utah County, Orem, and Lehi residents, the most important aspect of flossing is simply that you do it every single day. However, many dental patients find that trying out a few different types of floss helps them to establish the habit and get the flossing comfort they desire.

Let’s take a look at some of the most common types of dental floss found in Provo area drugstores.

Basic floss is either a monofilament floss, which is usually made of some kind of rubber or plastic, or multifilament, which is made of nylon or silk. Nylon floss is less expensive, more common and is sold waxed or unwaxed.

Monofilament floss will not rip or tear, and because of this, it is thought to more easily pull in between teeth. This type of floss is sometimes referred to as “glide” floss.

Both monofilament floss and multifilament floss are sold in differing thicknesses, and this is where most dental patients would benefit from finding the size that fits. Since you should not have to snap the floss between your teeth, find the thickness that allows you to gently floss.

Dental tape is nylon floss in the shape of a wide, flat ribbon. Many Utah County, American Fork, and Lehi residents find that dental tape is the easiest floss to get between their teeth.

For those of you with braces or appliances put in by your Orem area orthodontist, there are also flosses designed to be used with these devices. Make sure to discuss flossing with your orthodontist because you don’t want to break this valuable habit just because you’re having your teeth straightened!

A good person to ask about floss advice is your dental hygienist. Here at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry, our hygienists are prepared to answer any questions you have about flossing, brushing habits, and even cosmetic dentistry procedures such as teeth whitening and veneers.

3 Ways To Keep Your Mouth Happy, Utah County!

Provo Teeth Bleaching

Hi. We’re Dr. Hammond, a team of experienced dentists here in Provo. It is our goal to help our patients have optimum oral health, and today we would like to talk about something else associated with our mouths that doesn’t get as much attention as cavities or cosmetic dentistry: it’s our sense of taste.

A happy mouth is not only a healthy mouth, but also a mouth that can enjoy the flavors of all types of foods. And it turns out that many of the habits that will keep your taste buds sensitive are those that will also be good for your teeth and gums. So here are a few tips to help you better enjoy the flavor of your food.

1) Treat dry mouth. Dry mouth can create a loss of taste sensitivity, so it should be treated quickly by your Utah County, American Fork, or Lehi dentist. Plus, optimal levels of saliva are important to avoid cavities and keep gums healthy.

2) Avoid processed foods with fake flavors and too much sugar and salt. They will quickly desensitize you to more subtle, healthy flavors.

3) Don’t smoke! Cigarettes are responsible for so many horrible health issues, but many people don’t realize that their sense of taste is dulled while they smoke and the olfactory nerves can even be damaged permanently.

Thank you so much for visiting the Provo dentist blog. Along with dental health and a keen sense of taste, I want my patients to have the beautiful smiles they have always desired. So, if you have any questions regarding cosmetic dentistry such as smile makeovers, dental implants or teeth whitening, please contact us. We are located at 3575 N 100 E and you can reach us for an appointment at 801-374-0070.
