Coffee, Wine, and Time: Why Your Smile Fades (and How We Fix It)

You love your morning coffee. You enjoy a glass of red wine with dinner. These small pleasures make life richer, but they leave a mark on your smile. Over the years, those daily rituals add up, and one day you notice your teeth just aren’t as bright as they used to be.

If that sounds familiar, you’re in good company. At Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Provo, UT, Dr. Chris Hammond has helped countless patients understand why smiles lose their sparkle and, more importantly, how to bring it back.

What’s Really Staining Your Teeth

Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry’s personalized teeth whitening technology transform dull smiles into bright, confident ones you’ll feel proud to share every day

The enamel on your teeth may feel smooth, but under a microscope it’s full of tiny pores. Deeply pigmented drinks like coffee, tea, and red wine seep into those pores and settle in. Each cup and each glass deposits a little more color, and the stains build slowly over time.

Coffee and wine are the usual suspects, but they’re not alone. Dark sodas, berries, tomato sauce, and even tobacco all play a part. Add the natural aging process to the mix, and the results compound. As we get older, enamel thins and the yellowish layer beneath it, called dentin, starts to show through. That combination of surface stains and everyday wear is why so many adults feel their smile looks dull, tired, or older than they feel.

The good news? You don’t have to accept it as permanent.

How Professional Whitening Restores Your Shine

Store-bought strips and toothpastes can only do so much. They tend to work slowly, treat the surface unevenly, and often leave you frustrated. Professional whitening is different. It uses stronger, carefully controlled treatments that lift stains from deep within the enamel, delivering results you can actually see.

Because the treatment is supervised by a dental professional, it’s also safer and more comfortable. Dr. Hammond, who has practiced in Provo since 1996, brings decades of expertise in both general and cosmetic dentistry to every whitening plan. He looks at your whole smile, not just the color, so your results look natural and healthy.

An Air-dried Toothbrush Is A Healthy Toothbrush, Orem

An Air-dried Toothbrush Is A Healthy Toothbrush Orem

Today in our Provo dental blog we will highlight some of the simple things you can do with your toothbrush to keep your mouth as clean and healthy as possible.

One of the most important habits Orem residents can form is to always allow their toothbrush to completely air dry between uses. The best way to let the toothbrush air dry is by placing it in a toothbrush holder on the counter with the bristles pointing up. This method of storage is much better than sticking it away in a drawer since it will take longer to dry in there.

Also, when you travel away from the Utah County, American Fork, or Lehi area, make sure your toothbrush is dry before you seal it away in a travel container.

A good strategy for Provo residents to make sure their toothbrush has ample time to dry is to buy two toothbrushes at your Orem drugstore. Then alternate between the two so each has time to fully dry out between uses.

And Orem dental patients should remember to replace their toothbrush (or toothbrushes) every 3 to 4 months, or sooner if they’ve had a cold!

Provo Dental Patients Want A Choice In Dental Fillings

Provo Dental Patients Want A Choice In Dental Fillings

With all the talk in Provo of multi-procedure smile makeovers involving veneers, porcelain crowns, bridges, teeth whitening, dental implants, and invisible braces, sometimes the traditional dental filling is overlooked. If a cavity progresses no further than a filling, Utah cosmetic dental patients can avoid more extensive and invasive treatments. Today, let’s talk about dental fillings.

Most dental patients in the Provo and Orem area have a few fillings in their mouth. When a tooth has been damaged through decay, a dental filling is the most common way Utah family dentists restore the tooth to its previous, intact condition.

Dental fillings have been used for over a hundred years, and they’ve come a long way from the silvery amalgam fillings many of us in the Utah County area remember.

Provo cosmetic dentists and dental labs have been working to formulate filling materials that are more cosmetically pleasing to their Utah patients.

Today, the filling material of choice in Provo and around the country is a composite of plastic resin with glass or quartz filler. Referred to as composite fillings, Provo dental patients love the fact that they can be matched to their natural tooth color, making them practically invisible. This is particularly important when the filling needs to be in a conspicuous part of the mouth, such as the front teeth.

Despite the popularity of tooth-colored fillings, many Provo dentists still find amalgam fillings appropriate in some cases. Dental amalgam is made from a metal alloy, which gives it the ability to hold strong even when the chewing load is great.

We’re Dr. Hammond, cosmetic Provo dentists, and we work hard to make sure our clients enjoy their dental visits and love their smiles. We find it especially rewarding when Orem, Utah County, and Provo residents find renewed confidence after a smile makeover. So whether you are interested in replacing metal fillings with composites, or if you want to discuss tooth whitening and veneers, our staff would be happy to answer any questions you have.

5 Cavity Basics For Orem

Orem Cosmetic Dentist

Some of the most popular dental topics discussed in Utah County and Provo relate to cosmetic dentistry, such as teeth whitening, veneers, and dental implants. However, the desire to avoid cavities is still the main reason American Fork and Lehi residents visit their dentists, so today the Provo dental blog is going to highlight the 5 things you need to know about cavities.

1. Cavities can also be called caries or tooth decay. When a tooth is permanently damaged in the hard surface, tiny openings occur. These little holes are cavities.

2. Factors that contribute to tooth decay are:

Frequent eating
Consuming sugary beverages
Oral bacteria
Poor dental hygiene

3. Cavities may get so bad that you will see pits or holes in your teeth, but symptoms may be more subtle, such as sensitivity, pain when biting, or a toothache. If you experience any of these symptoms, you should call your Utah County, American Fork, or Lehi dentist today for an appointment.

4. Cavities are more common among children, but that doesn’t mean adults don’t have to take precautions.

5. Avoiding cavities is simple. Be sure to brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, floss daily, eat right and avoid snacking, and have regular visits with your dentist.

If you are in the market for quality dental care in the Provo area, give Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry a call.

We have been treating dental patients in and around Orem since 1967. We can also answer any questions you have about cosmetic dentistry procedures such as gum contouring and smile makeovers.
