Saliva And Provo’s Dental Health
Hi. We’re Drs. Hammond. Welcome to our Provo general dentistry blog. Today we’ll be looking at the complexity and importance of your saliva. Though most people in Provo or the surrounding areas may think it’s gross, saliva is essential to dental health as well as digestion.
Saliva is mostly water, but a small portion of it is made up of enzymes, antibacterial substances, mucus, and minerals. The pH balance of the mouth is maintained by saliva, and pH balance is a key factor in the development of cavities and other forms of tooth decay.
The minerals in saliva help to maintain the enamel surface of the teeth. Immunoproteins in saliva inhibit the overgrowth of microbes in the mouth, thereby protecting the gums from gingivitis.
Now that Provo residents know how important saliva is to dental health, we’re sure you can see why ample salivary flow should concern you. For most of our Provo patients, everyday chewing is enough to stimulate salivary glands to release saliva. However, dry mouth, also known as xerostomia, is an ailment that should be dealt with quickly before oral health complications occur.
If you are in the Provo area and are looking for quality dental services and care, please contact our office today at 801-374-0070. We have been providing general and cosmetic dentistry in Provo since 1996.

Oral Rinses: An Extra Measure Of Tooth Protection For Utah County Kids
Hello, We’re Drs. Hammond of Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry. Utah County parents usually know the basics on children’s oral health: limit sugar, make sure they brush and floss regularly, take them to a family dentistry professional for twice-yearly exams and cleanings, discourage between-meal snacking, see that they get enough calcium and Vitamin D, etc. Many Utah County parents also give their kids fluoride supplements if their municipal water supply has an inadequate level of fluoride.
Is there anything else a concerned Utah County parent can do to promote children’s oral health? Yes! Have children use an oral rinse that contains fluoride.
Fluoride supplements help strengthen teeth that are still forming, but fluoride rinses help teeth that have already come in. A fluoride rinse is an added measure of protection.
We recommend Utah County children use an oral rinse after they brush and floss. They should swish it around in their mouth for thirty seconds or so, and then spit it out. (Make sure your child doesn’t swallow it!) This should be the last substance in their mouth before they go to bed. The fluoride will remain on the teeth and help prevent new cavities from forming. It can also help stop any demineralization that has already begun by accumulating in the tiny fissures and fortifying the enamel.
At Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry, we focus on preventative dentistry for Utah County families. We believe that today’s area children can enjoy healthy teeth for life.
In addition to all general dentistry procedures, we also offer complete smile makeovers. If you are interested in transforming your entire smile with precision cosmetic dentistry, call us at 801-374-0070 to schedule an appointment.

You Won’t Miss The Metal With Invisible Braces In Provo
Hello! Welcome to my Provo dentistry blog. Do you have crooked teeth? Do you wish you would have had braces as a kid, but feel it is too late now? Maybe you feel self-conscious about smiling with a mouth full of metal. I have good news for you: at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry, we offer invisible braces.
The main advantage of invisible braces is that it is nearly impossible to see them while they are being worn, but the results are definitely noticeable!
Don’t let the absence of metal fool you. The clear removable Invisalign aligners effectively correct the alignment and crowding problems that can affect the overall health of your teeth.
My name is Drs. Hammond of Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry. My staff and I want you to feel great about your smile. In addition to invisible braces, we also offer dental restorations, teeth whitening, and porcelain veneers. Did you know that dental veneers can correct some alignment problems?
Please call my Provo office today at 801-374-0070 to schedule an orthodontic consultation. Your oral health is important, so make sure you are getting the regular exams and cleanings you deserve. Here at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry, we provide the highest possible standard of dental care.
Don’t let crooked teeth prevent you from the smile you deserve, ask us about invisible braces today!

The Dangers of Oral Piercing
If you live in the Provo area and are considering puncturing your lip or tongue, read this:
Infection
Your mouth is full of bacteria. Any opening in the tissue carries the risk of infection. The germs from your tongue and mouth can easily get into your bloodstream. Provo cosmetic dentists and doctors are continually treating serious infections caused by oral piercings. Oral infections can be a real problem, and should be a major consideration before getting an oral piercing.
Tooth Damage
It should come as no surprise that having a piece of metal bang around in your mouth can easily chip tooth enamel. Though tooth enamel is amazingly strong, once it’s chipped or cracked, it can only be restored with artificial material. Fortunately, Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Provo offers many tooth restoration options such as dental crowns and fillings, but our advice is to avoid the problem if you can.
Prolonged Bleeding and Swelling
The blood vessels in the tongue are often damaged when the tongue is pierced, causing prolonged bleeding and possible build-up of scar tissue. In some cases, the tongue swells up enough to block the airway.
Gum Recession
A number of periodontal disease studies have shown that wearing oral jewelry is linked to periodontal disease which can result in tooth loss. Periodontal disease, or ‘gum disease’, can cause gum recession and exposes the root of your teeth, potentially causing hyper sensitivity and pain. Again, our advice is to avoid the problem right from the start.
These are just a few of the dangers. Drs. Hammond at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry can give you more information about the risks of oral piercings. If you already have damage, call 801-374-0070 to schedule a consultation.
