Use Five Fingers For Quick And Healthy Flossing In Provo, Utah

porcelain veneers cost Orem

Here are five flossing steps made so easy you can tick them off one finger at a time thanks to Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry, on the web at https://www.cosmeticdentistryutahcounty.com/about-us/.

Thumbkin: Thumb to Chest Reminder
Thumb to chest can remind me that this isn’t for my friends. Brushing the goobers off so I don’t gross them out; rinsing with mouthwash for fresh breath as I speak – THAT is for friends. Flossing is for me, myself and I. I want healthy gums, therefore I floss.

Pointer: Pointer Fingers Measure
How much floss will I need to floss my 32 teeth? The American Dental Association suggests you start with about 18 inches. About 6 lengths of your pointer finger should suffice.

Tall Man: Wrap the Middle Fingers
This is a team effort. With the middle fingers wound up in the floss, the thumb and forefinger can grip and guide the floss into place. After curving the floss around the tooth into a “C” shape, and using up and down motions to wipe away plaque, then “unspool” the floss for a new section for the next tooth’s edges.

Ring Man: The Smell Test
Many a long-term relationship has been cut short due to not-so-fresh breath. Smell floss before going between teeth. Smell it after. Bad smell? Brushing is not cleaning away that bacteria well enough. Hurray for floss! This smell test says the brushing needs to be adjusted. Be gentle with your gums. Keep those spots at the base of your teeth bacteria free.

Pinky: Time to Promise
Make the commitment now. Every time you look at your pinky, remember that you pinky promised to keep those gums free from disease. Flossing isn’t so much about removing food as it is about removing dental plaque. Plaque causes tooth decay and inflamed gums. Periodontal disease eventually leads to tooth loss. Tooth neglect is a slippery slope.

How Much are Dental Implants In Provo, Utah?

Lehi tooth implants cost

Looking into how much dental implants cost and getting a straight answer can be frustrating. But there is a reason for that.

I am Dr. Hammond. Thanks for stopping to read our blog. We know it can be frustrating to look for the cost of getting a dental implant procedure done and finding nothing solid here on the internet. Let us take a moment to explain why most dental websites don’t publish the cost of tooth implants.

1. The Math Might Come Out Higher Than it Should
The number of teeth being replaced may be more than the number of implants needed to cover that section of the mouth. Tooth implant dentists here in Provo, Utah, want to offer accurate pricing rather than scare you away with higher estimates. It takes a easy consultation to review dental history, assess needs, and determine a treatment plan. This could mean a more efficient surgery with fewer implants. See https://www.cosmeticdentistryutahcounty.com/about-us/.

2. There Might Be Something Better For Your Mouth
While dental implants really are the state of the art in tooth replacement, much better than a bridge or denture, sometimes the method won’t be what you thought it was going to be. If your heart is set on implants or if you’ve been told by others in Lehi, Utah County, or American Fork that’s what you should get, we can help to explain the pros and cons of this path.

3. Supply Costs and Lab Costs Change

A ballpark number might be possible to post on the internet but the changing cost of supplies and lab fees make it impossible to guarantee an exact price for full mouth dental implants. Dentists who offer implants can accurately calculate dental implant surgery costs based on current costs when you come in for a consultation.

Please make an appointment to quickly and accurately get these answers. Call Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry at 801-374-0070 for more information.

Relax. Your Teeth Will Thank You.

Lehi cosmetic dental and tooth implants

Most Provo adults have been warned about the physical effects of stress. Our doctors remind us to protect ourselves from the dangers of unmanaged stress by eating healthy, exercising regularly, and getting adequate sleep.

We know that we shouldn’t try to relieve stress with overeating, excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, or compulsive spending. (Even though many of us are guilty!)

Stress that is not sensibly managed can affect the heart, nervous system, immune system, and digestive system. It can also affect – you guessed it – your teeth.

The obvious risks to oral health are teeth grinding, jaw clenching, smoking, and the overconsumption of sugary foods. But did you know that stress can increase plaque production, trigger canker sores, and increase the risk of periodontal disease? Another problem is that when people are under excessive stress, they often neglect basic oral hygiene.

If you’re concerned about the effect stress can have on your teeth, schedule an appointment with Dr. Hammond at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry today. We offer a broad scope of preventative, restorative, and cosmetic dental services including sedation dentistry, Invisalign, mini implants, and dental crowns.

It’s unfortunate, but for some Provo residents, dental visits cause major anxiety. What if the thought of visiting a dentist sends your blood pressure through the roof? Talk to us about sedation dentistry.

Relax. We can help you get the dental treatment you need.

What Is Oil Pulling?

Provo lowest price teeth bleaching

Today’s Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry dental post looks at oil pulling – an alternative practice that has been generating a lot of buzz around Provo. Oil pulling has been a part of Indian Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years. It is the practice of swishing oil in the mouth for twenty minutes to benefit the teeth, gums and overall health and well-being. The oils most commonly used are coconut oil, sesame oil, and sunflower oil.

Proponents claim that it detoxifies the mouth, cleans plaque, reduces inflammation, cures bad breath, whitens teeth, kills infection, and boosts the immune system. Some advocates even claim that it “cures” cavities and periodontal disease.

What does the American Dental Association say about oil pulling? Here is an excerpt from a May 2014 article:

“To date, scientific studies have not provided the necessary clinical evidence to demonstrate that oil pulling reduces the incidence of dental caries, whitens teeth or improves oral health and well-being. Based on the lack of currently available evidence, oil pulling is not recommended as a supplementary oral hygiene practice, and certainly not as a replacement for standard, time-tested oral health behaviors and modalities. The ADA recommends that patients follow a standard oral hygiene regimen that includes twice-daily toothbrushing with fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between teeth once a day with floss or another interdental cleaner, using ADA-Accepted products. Brushing with fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between teeth help prevent cavities and keep gums healthy.”1

Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry cautions patients not to replace brushing, flossing, and regular dental cleanings/exams with oil pulling.

At Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry, we provide top-quality dental care for every member of your family. We serve all of your preventative, restorative, and cosmetic dental needs including sedation dentistry, Invisalign, mini implants, dental crowns, and porcelain veneers. Provo Dental News: Poor Oral Health And Heart Disease

Top Provo Family Dentists Attention Provo dental patients: brushing twice daily may help lower your risk of heart disease. Utah scientists, dentists, and cardiologists have known for many years that there is a link between inflammation in the mouth (gum disease) and heart problems. However, a recent study analyzed oral health habits and heart disease risk. Science Daily reported on the study, which was published in the British Medical Journal.

We quote from the Science Daily article:

“The authors, led by Professor Richard Watt from University College London, analyzed data from over 11,000 adults who took part in a Scottish Health Survey. The research team analyzed data about lifestyle behaviors such as smoking, physical activity, and oral health routines.”

“Once the data was adjusted for established cardio risk factors, the researchers found that participants who reported less frequent toothbrushing had a 70 percent extra risk of heart disease compared to individuals who brushed their teeth twice a day.”

We are Dr. Hammond DDS of Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry. The Scottish survey is one of many that confirms the link between oral health and overall health. Simply put: you aren’t healthy unless your gums and teeth are healthy.

It doesn’t matter if you are a lean Provo distance runner with a pulse of fifteen beats a minute and a blood pressure of 100 over 60. It doesn’t matter if you are an Orem vegan who has eaten a nutritionally balanced, low-fat diet for the past five years. If you have inflamed gums and tooth decay, you are at risk for problems in other areas of your body.

The phone number for Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry is 801-374-0070. If you have concerns about your oral health, I invite you to schedule an examination today.

Perhaps your teeth and gums are healthy but you wish your smile was more attractive. We can help you! We offer complete smile redesigns. Porcelain veneers, crowns, inlays/onlays, and orthodontia are all available to solve any cosmetic problems you wish to correct.

If you have a small child who has not visited a pediatric dentist in Provo yet, now is the time. My caring team and I will help keep your child’s smile beautiful for life.

5 Cavity Basics For Orem

Orem Cosmetic Dentist

Some of the most popular dental topics discussed in Utah County and Provo relate to cosmetic dentistry, such as teeth whitening, veneers, and dental implants. However, the desire to avoid cavities is still the main reason American Fork and Lehi residents visit their dentists, so today the Provo dental blog is going to highlight the 5 things you need to know about cavities.

1. Cavities can also be called caries or tooth decay. When a tooth is permanently damaged in the hard surface, tiny openings occur. These little holes are cavities.

2. Factors that contribute to tooth decay are:

Frequent eating
Consuming sugary beverages
Oral bacteria
Poor dental hygiene

3. Cavities may get so bad that you will see pits or holes in your teeth, but symptoms may be more subtle, such as sensitivity, pain when biting, or a toothache. If you experience any of these symptoms, you should call your Utah County, American Fork, or Lehi dentist today for an appointment.

4. Cavities are more common among children, but that doesn’t mean adults don’t have to take precautions.

5. Avoiding cavities is simple. Be sure to brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, floss daily, eat right and avoid snacking, and have regular visits with your dentist.

If you are in the market for quality dental care in the Provo area, give Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry a call.

We have been treating dental patients in and around Orem since 1967. We can also answer any questions you have about cosmetic dentistry procedures such as gum contouring and smile makeovers.

Is It Growing In Your Mouth?

Orem Invisalign

Believe it or not, plaque can rear its ugly head in any Provo mouth – even yours – no matter how meticulous you try to be. If you have deep grooves, watch out. If you have a receding gum line, watch out. If you are a candy-loving Provo resident with the proverbial sweet tooth, watch out.

The plaque process goes something like this:
Bacteria naturally occurs in the mouth, always will. Bacteria will try to colonize on the smooth surfaces of your teeth. At first, it will be soft enough to be removed with a fingernail. After 48 hours, it will start to harden. Give it 10 days and it will be that substance most difficult to remove, tartar. (See picture.) This bacteria will feed on sugars and produce acid that will eat away the tissues of the tooth and lead to cavities. Cavities will originate on the surface and spread on and through the tooth. The best way to deal with plaque is to have a consistent removal process, i.e. regular daily brushing and flossing after eating and even sleeping.

A fabulous smile with fabulous teeth isn’t always the reality for Orem, Utah County, American Fork, and Lehi folks. We encourage anyone in the Orem area who is unhappy with their smile to consider the benefits of a smile makeover.

Cosmetic dentistry can be a significant investment but the truth of just how much it will cost for veneers, braces, teeth whitening, and even dental implants may surprise you. At our Provo cosmetic dentistry office you can expect to learn about sedation dentistry, Invisalign, mini implants, dental crowns, porcelain veneers, and any number of other dental services.

Water Fluoridation In Utah Prevents Tooth Decay

Water Fluoridation In Utah Prevents Tooth Decay

Hello! Welcome to our Provo family dentistry blog. Today’s message from Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry concerns fluoride and Utah children’s dental health. We’re Dr. Hammond and we have been practicing dentistry in Provo since 1967.

When I examine a new Provo patient for the first time, I can usually tell whether the person drank fluoride-adjusted municipal water while growing up. Generally, their teeth are healthier than Orem people who had lower fluoride levels in their tap water.

Ideally, adequate fluoride intake combined with proper oral hygiene, good nutrition, and regular dental visits keep teeth healthy and free of decay. However, fluoride also helps teeth remineralize if acids have already compromised the enamel. For decay prevention and teeth strengthening, adequate fluoride is indispensable.

If you have children and your Utah municipal water supply does not have the recommended level of fluoride, you may want to consider giving your kids a fluoride supplement. The fluoride will strengthen the primary teeth that have already erupted and also the adult teeth that are forming.

The American Dental Association supports water fluoridation:

‘More than 65 years ago, on January 25, 1945, Grand Rapids, Michigan became the world’s first city to adjust the level of fluoride in its water supply. Since that time, fluoridation has dramatically improved the oral health of tens of millions of Americans. Community water fluoridation is the single most effective public health measure to prevent tooth decay.’ http://www.ada.org/fluoride.aspx

At Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry, we provide exceptional dental care for all members of the family including general and cosmetic dentistry. We serve the Provo, Utah County, American Fork, and Lehi areas. Ask us about teeth whitening, veneers, crowns, and short-term braces.

If you are interested in children’s fluoride supplements, call Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry at 801-374-0070 to schedule a pediatric dental evaluation.
