Five Fast Ways to Improve Your Smile

cosmetic dental and implants ProvoDo you have a special event coming up? Perhaps a wedding, graduation, milestone birthday, anniversary, or reunion? At Hammond Aesthetic and General Dentistry in Provo we have five cosmetic dentistry procedures that can usually be completed in one office visit, to quickly improve your smile!

  • Veneers. Porcelain veneers have been a successful treatment for decades but we never fail to be amazed by the results. A veneer is a super-thin layer of porcelain bonded permanently to the front of a tooth. A veneer can cover a chip, hide a crack, make discoloration disappear, or correct a misshapen tooth.
  • Gum Contouring. Perhaps your teeth are sensational and healthy but you have a gumline that is too low or too high and detracts from the presentation. Gum contouring can reshape the gumline and beautify your smile.
  • Enamel Shaping. Just one slightly misshapen tooth can downgrade the aspects of a smile even if all the other teeth look great. Let us reshape the tooth so it blends in seamlessly.
  • Bonding. Dental bonding just gets better and better. Bonding is used in a multitude of applications to fix teeth with cosmetic and structural problems. The newest prep techniques are minimally invasive – leaving you with more of your own tooth structure.
  • Teeth Whitening. Make your smile pop with professional in-office teeth whitening. There is nothing like a terrific white smile to give you optimal confidence.

Cosmetic dentistry from Hammond Aesthetic and General Dentistry in Provo is an investment that will bless you every day. We’ve improved the smiles of people from American Fork and Lehi, who also come to our office for family dentistry. Schedule an appointment with us today!

Why is the 4-Step Tooth Implant Timeline Necessary?

why does a tooth implant take several months? Provo

Dental implants from Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Provo are state-of-the-art in tooth replacement.

The process for getting an implant can take several months, but don’t let that discourage you. Each stage of the procedure is important. It’s not a drawback; it is indicative of the permanent nature of an implant.

The Dental Implant Timeline

1. Dental Implant Examination and Assessment

A complete tooth implant and restoration consists of the post or root replacement, the abutment, and the final restoration (crown, denture, bridge, or partial denture).

It all starts with a consultation. We’ll take X-rays and analyze your mouth and examine your teeth, gums, and jawbone. If you don’t have adequate bone at the implant site, we may recommend bone grafting.

2. Placement

The first step is to insert the titanium implant into your jawbone. This is not as difficult or painful as it sounds. Most patients are surprised at how fast and easy the procedure is. It usually takes one to two hours.

Over-the-counter pain relievers are usually enough for post-surgery discomfort. Most people can go back to work after the surgery.

3. Osseointegration

The key to implant placement is called osseointegration, which means the titanium post fusing with the bone. In most cases it takes three to six months for this to happen. Once it does, you’ve got a rock-solid foundation for the implant.,

4. Placing the Final Restoration

The final step is a crown, bridge, or denture. A connecting piece called an abutment attaches the restoration to the artificial root(s). The crown, bridge, or denture is all that is visible at the end of the process.

Teeth supported by dental implants from Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Provo are life-changing. We’ve placed them in patients from American Fork and Lehi. We also offer porcelain veneers and other cosmetic dentistry, and much more. Please call to schedule an appointment with us today!

Royalty At Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry

porcelain crown Provo

When we crown one of our patients at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Provo, the coronation is a celebration of a stronger smile.

The need for a dental crown is usually apparent. Crowns (sometimes called caps) restore a decayed or damaged tooth to its original size, shape, and functionality.

Crowns are sometimes extended down to a tooth’s root surface. Most often, though, they replace the top portion of the tooth – also known as the crown, hence the name of the restoration.

Dental crowns are custom-made for each tooth. Once a crown is cemented permanently into place, they strengthen what was a weakened tooth. They prevent cracked teeth from cracking any further and provide support to teeth that have large, existing fillings.

Dental crowns from Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Provo are an excellent solution for damaged teeth. We have placed them in patients from American Fork and Lehi, who also come to our practice for dental implants and much more. Call our office to schedule a checkup today!

Why Fluoride Is Essential For Your Child’s Oral Health

This message from Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Provo is about fluoride, and its role in dental health.

Fluoride is a mineral that helps teeth stay strong. It is found in some foods and water, and is added to many toothpastes.

Fluoride plays a key role in children’s dental health. Kids should start using fluoride toothpaste when they are old enough to spit while brushing. Start with a tiny pea-sized dab, gradually increasing the amount as they grow.

Fluoride treatments help teeth by making them stronger and more resistant to cavity-causing bacteria. Perhaps not surprisingly, the single most common problem in children’s teeth are cavities. According to one study, sixty percent of kids in the United States have at least one cavity by the age of five, and one of every five kids has untreated tooth decay.

A good brushing and flossing routing at home, and regular checkups at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Provo, can help. We offer complete family dentistry. People from American Fork and Lehi also come to us for dental implants, and much more. Please call our office to schedule an appointment today!

6 Easy Ways To Eat Like A Dentist

Lehi cosmetic dental and tooth implants

In this post from Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Provo, we are talking about nutrition. There is nothing that impacts your smile as much as your eating habits. Develop good nutrition and your dentist will smile down on you too.

1. Rinse after eating

Rinse your mouth with a sip of water or brush your teeth after meals. People who snack all day long subject their teeth to sugars and food debris. Planned meals with brushing in between keeps your oral health on top.

2. Abstain from sugary gum

Sugar free gum doesn’t leave sugar to break down on your teeth and jeopardize your hard earned healthy gums. If you are gum chewer, do your smile a favor and go sugarless.

3. Avoid sticky foods

Sticky foods have a habit of clinging to your teeth, which puts you at risk of decay. Toffee, gummy candy, fruit snacks, even excessive dried fruit can be perilous for smiles. Brushing doesn’t always remove the obstinate particles, so remember to floss after eating sticky items.

4. Consume nutritious foods

A balanced diet with a variety of vitamins and minerals can keep the immune system durable and able to fight infection.

5. Say ‘cheese!’

Cheese contains calcium and protects teeth from acid that weakens tooth enamel. (It’s vital not to go overboard as cheese is high in fat.)

6. Avoid acidic foods

Acid will eat away enamel over time: lemons, red wine, soda pop. Limit direct, constant, consistent exposure. All things in moderation.

At Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Provo we offer complete family dentistry services. People from American Fork and Lehi also come to our practice for dental implants and much more. Call to schedule an appointment with us today!

Do You Have The Most Common Dental Problem?

Orem Teeth Whitening

Tooth decay is the single most common dental issue there is. Brushing and flossing your teeth twice a day goes a long way toward preventing it. That’s something we stress to all of our patients, at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Provo!

Cavities form when acids in the mouth attack the enamel and dentin of the teeth. The acid is produced by bacteria in plaque, that sticky film that forms on the surfaces of teeth. When sugar is introduced it interacts with the bacteria in the plaque, and makes the acids, which attack the teeth and cause cavities.

That’s why it is so important to choose food and drink wisely. But it isn’t easy, is it? Sugar seems to be in just about everything. Health experts say the average person in the United States consumes about 19.5 teaspoons of sugar every single day! That is twice as much as is recommended by the American Heart Association.

Knowing how much sugar is in the food that you buy is vital: not just to your teeth, but to your overall health. Reading ingredient labels on processed foods is essential.

At Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Provo we want the best possible dental health for all of our patients. So cut back on sugar, brush your teeth at least twice a day, don’t forget to floss, and see us for a cleaning and checkup every six months. People from American Fork and Lehi come to our practice for family and cosmetic dentistry. Schedule an appointment with us today!

Do Veneers Make Teeth Look Bigger?

Utah County cosmetic dental and tooth implants

Porcelain veneers do not make your teeth look larger – unless you want them to. A veneer can correct many flaws and is a minimally invasive restoration. Porcelain veneers are among the cosmetic dentistry procedures available at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Provo.

Veneers are an easy way to cover chips or cracks in your teeth, or gaps between them. They are thin shells of medical-grade ceramic cemented to the front of your teeth. Each veneer is custom-fitted to the tooth it is being affixed to.

Although veneers are generally considered a cosmetic procedure, they can also be used to replace lost enamel. The enamel that covers teeth is one of the strongest substances in the human body, but it can be damaged from years of consuming acidic foods or drinks, by acid reflux, or even by brushing your teeth too vigorously over the years. Veneers are an excellent remedy.

One caveat: when a veneer is placed over a tooth, a thin layer of existing enamel must be removed to make room for it. That means they are a permanent procedure.

Porcelain veneers are just one of the cosmetic dentistry procedures offered here at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Provo. Find out why people from American Fork and Lehi trust us with their smiles! Call for an appointment today!

Be Glad Dr. Hammond Has X-Ray Vision

family dentist Provo

During a dental checkup at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Provo we do a thorough inspection of your teeth and gums. But visual inspections can’t tell us everything we need to know, which is why we take x-rays.

For most patients, we update our x-rays once a year. They help us to make accurate diagnoses by showing what cannot be seen by the eye alone. Also known as radiographs, the images give us the total picture: not just inside your teeth, but the tip of the roots and the bone under the gums. Thanks to x-rays, we are able to identify and treat dental issues before they become more serious.

There are several types of x-rays:

  • Bite-Wing x-rays give us a picture of the upper and lower back teeth. We can see how they touch each other and see if there is any decay.
  • Panoramic x-rays give us the big picture: a view of the teeth, jaws and jaw joints, nasal area, and even the sinuses. These are especially useful if we think the patient may need orthodontics or a dental implant.
  • Occlusal x-rays show us the floor of the mouth, and the bite of the upper or lower jaw. They’re good for showing the development of children’s teeth, both the baby and permanent teeth.

X-rays use radiation, but are designed to minimize patient exposure. Patients only get negligible amounts, making them safe. The latest generations of x-rays reduce radiation even more. Still, we take the added safety measure of covering the patient with a heavy leaded apron and collar.

At Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Provo, we are committed to providing our patients with the best possible dental care. People from American Fork and Lehi come to our practice for family dentistry and more. Schedule an appointment with us today!

Do’s

First, use an oral rinse every day. There are many over-the-counter products with whitening agents to help keep your smile bright. As a bonus, they can improve your overall oral hygiene.

Don’ts

Avoid acidic foods and beverages. These can weaken or wear away the enamel on your teeth. Weak enamel allows the yellow dentin to show through.

Remember the Basics

Regular brushing goes a long way toward keeping your white smile. Try for twice a day. Whitening toothpastes can help the process. Brush for at least two minutes, and remember to get along the gumline.
