Does Your Teen Have Unique Dental Challenges?

adolescent dental health

When it comes to oral health, adolescence is a pivotal time for Provo youth. On the upside, the last of the permanent teeth come in providing young men and women with their “adult smile”. Good habits can be forged and reinforced. Teeth can be straightened, providing increased confidence when it is often sorely needed.

On the downside, some teens take up habits that are detrimental to their teeth. Adolescents often don’t understand the importance of proper dental hygiene and fail to adequately care for their teeth. Some young Provo men and women develop teenage tooth decay that can cause recurring dental problems in later years.

Eating disorders are far too common among Provo area teens. Bulimia can cause enamel erosion, decay, and even complete tooth loss. Parents who suspect their teen has an eating disorder are strongly advised to intervene immediately and provide appropriate medical care and counseling.

The importance of diet cannot be overstated. Adolescence is a time when many young Orem men and women decrease their calcium intake – a danger to both bones and teeth. The consumption of energy drinks and sugared soda also contribute to tooth and gum problems in teenagers.

Furthermore, teens that use tobacco and illegal drugs have an increased risk of tooth decay and oral cancer. Oral piercings can be extremely detrimental. The health risks include tooth and gum damage, infection, allergic reactions, nerve damage, and excessive swelling that can block airways.

Teens who are undergoing orthodontic treatment often have a difficult time properly cleaning their teeth. It is a challenge to fit toothbrush bristles and floss under dental hardware. Toothbrushes and flossing devices that squirt water can help teens with braces adequately clean their teeth and gums.

Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry advises Utah parents to make sure their teens receive twice-yearly dental exams and cleanings. Dr. Hammond can identify and treat oral issues in their early stages so that further damage can be prevented or minimized.

The American Academy of Pediatrics offers the following  guidelines for adolescent oral health:

Teens should drink fluoridated water.
Fluoride supplementation is recommended for high risk teens that don’t have access to fluoridated water (up to age 16).
Teens should use fluoridated toothpaste twice a day.
Teens should floss daily.1

Advanced Dentistry in Provo

Advanced Family Dentistry in Provo The world of dentistry continues to advance at a rapid pace. If you have visited a Provo dentist in the past few years, you have probably noticed the things that make your visit more comfortable, such as the ability to watch TV or listen to music while receiving treatment. Many Provo dentistry patients welcome oral conscious sedation to reduce or eliminate pain.

What may not be as obvious are the advances in techniques, tools and materials. Top Provo dentists now use digital computer imaging which is safer than traditional x-rays. Dental technicians can store, retrieve and transmit digital images much easier than was possible with traditional x-ray film.

The use of lasers has also changed the face of dentistry. Laser surgery requires less anesthesia, minimizes swelling, and protects surrounding tissue. Provo family dentists use lasers for detecting and treating cavities and dental technicians use them for the curing of restorative materials.

Another exciting development in cosmetic dentistry is the CAD-CAM technology that allows Provo cosmetic dentists to perform restorations in a single visit. The types of procedures that can be completed in one visit include crowns, fillings, inlays, onlays and veneers.

If you need a thorough exam or want to improve your smile with cosmetic dentistry, call Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry at 801-374-0070 to schedule a consultation. During your consultation, you can see before and after photos of some of our smile makeover clients. We would love to help you achieve the smile you have always wanted, and we have the tools, experience and technology to make that happen.

Dental Veneers: 7 Fast-Fixes For Orem Smiles

Happy Porcelain Veneers Patients In Orem

Hi! Welcome to the Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry blog, where we take the time to answer some of the questions dental patients in the Orem area are curious about. Today we are focusing on fabulous veneers, which are used extensively in cosmetic dentistry.

Dental veneers (also called laminates) are custom made to permanently cover the front part of one or more teeth. Wafer-thin, super-strong veneers can correct a variety of problems including:

1. Chips
2. Cracks
3. Stains
4. Teeth that are misshapen
5. Teeth that are too short
6. Teeth that are misaligned
7. Gaps between teeth

When you get dental veneers, your cosmetic dentist will first make a model of your teeth. Then, a dental technician uses the model to create the veneers. In some veneer procedures, a small amount of the enamel from the face of the tooth has to be removed so the veneers can be placed. In such cases, the procedure is irreversible.

If you are in the Orem area and are looking for a cosmetic, sedation or family dentist, give Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry a call. My name is Dr. Chris Hammond and we have been practicing advanced dentistry in the Orem area since 1996. The art and science of cosmetic dentistry is my passion.

Please call 801-374-0070 and a member of our warm and friendly staff can answer any questions you have about veneers, teeth whitening, TMJ treatment, sedation dentistry, pediatric dentistry, general dental care, or smile makeovers.

Keeping Dental Patients Comfortable In Orem

Keeping Dental Patients Comfortable in Alexandria

Pain isn’t fun. Your Orem family dentist knows this, and that is why the dental team at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry have made patient comfort a top priority. In conjunction with creating a relaxing environment, your dentist has various medications that can reduce and even eliminate pain associated with different dental procedures to give you a more enjoyable experience.

Some of the most common pain-relieving medications used in Orem cosmetic dental offices and around the country are topical anesthetics. These are swabbed directly onto mouth tissue so they only numb the very surface layers. Topical anesthetics can reduce the pain of mouth sores, or they can be applied to prepare the mouth for an injection.

Local anesthetics are injected into mouth tissue (usually the gums) to block the nerve sensations to specific areas of the mouth. Orem dentists numb the mouth in this way before filling cavities, treating gum disease, or before certain cosmetic dentistry procedures.

More involved dental procedures may necessitate the need for nitrous oxide or even general anesthesia. Ask us about sedation dentistry and oral conscious sedation.

It is very common for your dentist to recommend an over the counter analgesic to relieve pain after a dental visit. These medications include aspirin, ibuprofen, and acetaminophen.

Because your Orem cosmetic dentist will most likely use a pain reliever during the dental visit or prescribe something for you to take after the treatment, make sure you jot down a complete list of medications you are taking, including herbal supplements, before each appointment.

We’re Dr. Hammond and we want Orem residents to be informed about their dental care, especially as it pertains to pain relief during dental treatment. If you are in the Orem area and are looking for quality dental care, please contact our office today at 801-374-0070. Our continuing education staff would be happy to talk to you about cosmetic dentistry, sedation dentistry, implant dentistry, and the other services we offer.

Dentistry For Your Provo Child

Dentistry For Child Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry provides family dentistry. Our dentistry for children is performed by our friendly and professional staff and always takes into consideration the special circumstances that children require.

A little extra patience with our child patients is critical. We understand that going to the dentist can be a bit frightening for a child, so we make sure they are comfortable with their surroundings, and always invite mom or dad to join them in the room.

Family Dentistry requires more than just comfort, however. We take care to notice development patterns and watch for future trouble before it happens. We also teach proper hygiene for our child patients so that we can help you reinforce healthy habits that will produce strong, healthy and lasting teeth.

Dentistry for child patients is a big part of our practice here at Hammond Aesthetic & General Dentistry.
