Does My Utah County Dentist Care About My Diet?

Friday, November 4th, 2011

General Dentistry Utah County When people in the Utah County area think of diet and oral health, they probably think about the damage sweet drinks can cause to teeth. While it’s true that these sugars cause increased acidity in the mouth and lead to tooth decay, soda and sugary-fruit drinks are only part of the issue.

The typical American diet tends to be high in calories and low in nutrition, even here in Utah County.

If your body is lacking in certain nutrients, the tissues in the mouth may have trouble resisting infection. These infections can lead to gum disease.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has recently unveiled the MyPlate graphic to illustrate a healthy diet. Half of our meals should be composed of fruits and vegetables and the rest should be equally divided between lean protein, whole grains, and low-fat dairy.

While this is an excellent resource, dietary needs change throughout life, so it’s a good idea to call Hammond & Ellis Aesthetic & General Dentistry at 801-657-5633 and schedule a check-up to see if your diet is affecting your teeth.

When you eat a balanced diet and feel your best, you’ll want to look your best, so be sure to ask our skilled and caring staff about the latest cosmetic dentistry procedures such as complete smile makeovers and same day restorations.

At Hammond & Ellis Aesthetic & General Dentistry, our menu of services includes crowns, porcelain veneers, inlays, onlays, dental implants, tooth colored fillings, sealants, teeth whitening, and invisible braces. We also specialize in sedation dentistry for our Utah County patients who experience dental anxiety. Give our office a call today to schedule an appointment!

Orem Tooth Implants

Q: For Orem residents: When is the least expensive tooth replacement method really the most expensive?

A: When it ends up costing far more in the long run.

Many Orem sedation dentistry clients who lose a tooth do not understand the importance of replacing it with a dental implant. They wrongly believe that one missing tooth is not a significant problem. In fact, some Orem people who have an abscessed tooth extracted are so glad the pain is gone that they forget that the extraction is not the solution. When a tooth is lost, the risk of losing the adjacent teeth increases dramatically.

Dr. David Scharf, a Board Certified Periodontist and Dental Implant Surgeon and a Clinical Assistant Professor at New York University College of Dentistry says:

“Many times consumers will choose to replace a missing tooth with a removable partial denture because it is the least expensive option. In the long run however, removable partial dentures may be more costly due the loss of adjacent teeth and the need for future replacements. Many people opt to replace teeth with dental implants because they do not compromise the survival of the adjacent teeth.”

Dr. Scharf notes…

“With the price of gasoline and food soaring people try to cut back wherever they can. Unfortunately choosing the least expensive options for tooth replacement can have some very costly ramifications down the road.”

If you are missing a tooth, you may still be able to save the adjacent teeth if you receive an implant soon. An implant bonds chemically with the jaw bone and helps maintain its stability.

To schedule a dental implant consultation, call Hammond & Ellis Aesthetic & General Dentistry at 801-657-5633. In addition to cosmetic dentistry, we provide comprehensive general dentistry for families in the Orem, Utah area.

What Does A Missing Tooth Say About You?

Friday, October 14th, 2011

Park City Mini-Implants When you meet someone in Utah County who is missing a front tooth, what does that say to you? Do you wonder if they were in an accident? Do you automatically start making assumptions about their income, level of education and overall physical health?

Though it is extremely unfair, we are often judged (and misjudged) by our appearance. Even if a person is impeccably dressed and groomed, a missing front tooth detracts from the overall pleasing impression.

Here is a personal story from a woman who lost a tooth:

“I lost my job and along with it my dental insurance, then a month later, one of my front teeth. It has been very hard to find work…. and I know the missing tooth has cost me several jobs.”

A missing tooth can be a big deal.

Dental implants not only restore oral health, they restore self-confidence. Dental implants are a permanent solution for missing teeth. Studies have shown that after more than 20 years, the vast majority of dental implants placed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons continue to function at peak performance. If properly cared for, dental implants can last a lifetime.

Dental implants are one of the procedures we routinely perform at Hammond & Ellis, Aesthetic & General Dentistry to help our Utah County cosmetic dentistry clients regain the beautiful smile they once had. Not all cosmetic dental procedures are as extreme as teeth implants. There are many minimally-invasive remedies for unattractive smiles.

Porcelain veneers instantly provide a perfect, gleaming tooth surface for Utah County clients with broken or discolored teeth. Tooth whitening is a quick and affordable dentistry procedure in Utah County that achieves dramatic results without requiring the removal of any tooth structure. Call Hammond & Ellis, Aesthetic & General Dentistry at 801-657-5633 for more information about smile design and restorative dentistry.

Why Is Dry Mouth Dangerous For Provo Dental Patients?

Friday, August 5th, 2011

Why Is Dry Mouth Dangerous For Provo Dental Patients?Hello, welcome to the Hammond & Ellis Aesthetic & General Dentistry blog. Today we are going to talk about Dry Mouth, an unpleasant condition that can actually endanger the oral health of Provo Hammond & Ellis Aesthetic & General Dentistry dentistry patients.

Reduction of saliva flow resulting in a dry mouth is a more common problem among older Provo adults, however, people of all ages in the Provo area may experience the symptoms of dry mouth at one time or another. These symptoms include a dry, red tongue, difficulty swallowing, and persistent sore throat.

Sometimes dry mouth in Provo dental patients is caused by a disease or infection, but a more frequent cause of dry mouth for patients in Provo is prescription medications.

Decongestants, blood pressure medications, antidepressants, and painkillers (all used extensively in Provo) are just some of the drugs that list ‘dry mouth’ as a common side effect.

It is common for allergy-prone Hammond & Ellis Aesthetic & General Dentistry dental patients to complain of dry mouth when they start taking antihistamines during the Provo hay fever season.

Aside from being an uncomfortable nuisance, untreated dry mouth can cause tooth damage for Provo dental patients. Adequate saliva is necessary to keep the mouth lubricated, wash the food from teeth, and neutralize the acidic environment caused by plaque. Extensive tooth decay and can occur in the absence of saliva for Provo dental patients with chronic dry mouth.  Dry mouth can also cause bad breath.

If you are unsure of the cause of your dry mouth, or if you are looking for dry mouth treatments, call Hammond & Ellis Aesthetic & General Dentistry to schedule an appointment with Drs. Hammond & Ellis.

When you visit Hammond & Ellis Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Provo, please be sure to bring a list of medications you are taking so Drs. Hammond & Ellis can give you an accurate diagnosis.  We also offer cosmetic dentistry and implant dentistry services.

Let’s Talk About Your Smile

Friday, July 8th, 2011

Let’s Talk About Your SmileWe’re Drs. Chris Hammond & Chad Ellis of Hammond & Ellis Aesthetic & General Dentistry. Our office is located at 3575 North 100 East, Suite 200 in Provo. One of the best things about being Orem area dentists is interacting with our patients. During initial dental consultations, we listen carefully to our patient’s short and long term dental goals.

We enjoy discussing options and developing effective treatment plans tailored specifically to each person. Some of our clients desire a total smile makeover. I explain in detail the treatments available including teeth whitening, dental veneers, orthodontia, crown restoration, and dental implants.

If a client is nervous about undergoing treatment, we discuss oral conscious sedation. Oral conscious sedation, sometimes called oral sedation dentistry, is a great option for anxious patients. Dental visits do not have to be painful!

After the treatment has been completed, it is very gratifying for me to see my patient’s reaction to their new smile.

I never get tired of creating dramatic smile transformations for the best clients in Utah!

If you have been considering a smile makeover, let’s talk about your smile. Call Hammond & Ellis Aesthetic & General Dentistry at 801-657-5633 to schedule a cosmetic dentistry consultation.

Tooth-Colored Fillings in Orem

Friday, July 1st, 2011

Tooth-Colored Fillings in Orem Hello! Welcome to the Hammond & Ellis Aesthetic & General Dentistry blog. If this your first visit, we hope you find useful information about our Provo cosmetic dentistry practice. If you have read some of our previous articles, we are glad you checked back with us. We post new articles regularly.

We are Drs. Chris Hammond & Chad Ellis, DMD.  We have been practicing dentistry in Provo since 1996. Hammond & Ellis Aesthetic & General Dentistry is a full-service dental office located at 3575 North 100 East, Suite 200 in Provo. In addition to providing comprehensive examinations and deep cleanings for clients in the Orem area, we perform all types of tooth restorations.

When a tooth has decay or has been damaged, a dental restoration is needed to ‘restore’ the tooth to its previous intact condition. A dental filling is one of the most common and well-known types of restorations. A dental filling is used to repair decayed or damaged tooth surfaces. Most people have a few fillings in their mouth.

If you have old silver amalgam fillings, we can replace them with nearly-invisible fillings tooth colored. These fillings are made out of a strong composite resin. Many of our Orem general dentistry patients have replaced their old silver fillings with fillings matched to their teeth. You can improve your smile instantly and relatively inexpensively by getting rid of the ‘metal’.

Another reason some Orem clients have had their old fillings replaced is because they are concerned about the possible heavy metal toxicity of the mercury in the silver.

If you would like to replace your amalgam fillings, call us at 801-657-5633 to schedule a consultation. We are currently accepting new patients and would be happy to show you around our Orem cosmetic dental office and introduce you to our friendly team.  We also offer dental sedation for anxious patients.

Smile - it increases your face value!
